PM Modi announced the plan to send Indian astronauts into space by 2022.

ISRO aims to take Indian astronauts into space to a height of 350-400 km above the earth and orbit around the planet for at least a week by 2022. The astronauts will also be conducting experiments in space, details of which are yet to be decided by ISRO.

Modi's pledge sets an ambitious target date for the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to send humans into space. But the agency's head appears optimistic about the deadline. "We can achieve the 2022 target that the prime minister has announced," Kailasavadivoo Sivan, the ISRO chairman, told reporters.

"Everything will fall into place. We have a crew module, the crew escape system has been tested this year, and we have a launch vehicle. I do not think much more is needed as far as the technology is concerned," he added.

The ISRO will be working with the Institute of Aerospace Medicine in Bengaluru for training the crew and the Indian Air Force, which will select the crew, as well as with the private sector, which will be involved in research and development

The ISRO Chairman addressed the press conference in this tech hub hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in his Independence Day address in New Delhi the country's plan to put an Indian into space by 2022 on its own.

Admitting that the space agency was "surprised" by the Prime Minister's human space mission announcement, Sivan said the technological preparations for the project were on track since 2004.

The Indian manned mission will likely involve sending crew members into low Earth orbit for five to seven days, using an indigenous Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV-III). ISRO is expected to complete two unmanned missions before embarking on a manned space flight. ISRO estimates the mission will cost around 10,000 crore rupees ($1.42 billion, €1.25 billion).

"It's doable because India has already been testing various technologies way back since 2004," Ajey Lele, senior fellow at the Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses, a New Delhi-based think tank, told reporters.

India will become the 4th country in the world to send humans into space if successful, with own technology after US , USSR and china.

American space travellers = astronauts

Chinese space travellers = taikonauts

USSR space travellers = cosmonauts

Indian space travellers = vyomanauts

The Indian Human Spaceflight Programme was created by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to develop the technology needed to launch crewed orbital spacecraft into low Earth orbit.

The first crewed flight is planned with a spacecraft called Gaganyaan for 2022 on a home-grown GSLV-III rocket.

The Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Experiment (CARE) is an experimental test vehicle for the Indian Space Research Organisation's future Orbital Vehicle.

It was launched successfully on 18 December 2014 from the Second Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, by a GSLV Mk III designated by ISRO as the LVM 3X CARE mission.

The crew module was mounted upside-down inside the payload fairing of the GSLV Mk III. CARE was made of aluminium alloy and had a lift-off mass of 3,735 kg. Its diameter was 3100 mm and its height was 2678 mm. The module had an ablative thermal protection. The side panels were covered with Medium Density Ablative (MDA) tiles and the forward heat shield was made of carbon phenolic tiles. It was powered by batteries and was equipped with six liquid-propellant (MMH/MON3) 100 N thrusters.

ISRO Pad Abort Test was an Indian Space Research Organisation pad abort test of its human flight crew module as part of Indian human spaceflight programme. The successful test took place on 5 July 2018.

A Pad Abort Test is a trial run for a spacecraft's launch abort system (sometimes called a launch escape system). This system is designed to quickly get the crew and spacecraft away from the rocket in the event of a potential failure. It is similar to an ejection seat for a fighter pilot, but instead of ejecting the pilot out of the spacecraft, the entire spacecraft is “ejected” away from the launch vehicle.

ISRO also seeking funding and go ahead to develop India's first space station.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chief A S Kiran Kumar believes that India has capability, technology and infrastructure to develop its own space station but it needs approval from the government to work on the long-term plan.

While addressing the crowd at the foundation day ceremony of Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, Kumar further added that the Indian Space Research Organisation is waiting for the government to make a decision and they soon will start the work once they get the policy and necessary funds to start the project.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is on track to sending a human to space in its ‘Gaganyaan Mission’, the space agency said Tuesday. “The total programme cost is expected to be less than Rs 10,000 crores. Two unmanned Gaganyaan missions will be undertaken prior to sending humans to space,” ISRO chief K Sivan told reporters.

Sivan said the GSLV Mk-III launch vehicle, which has the necessary payload capability for the mission, will be used. “The total programme is expected to be completed by 2022 with the first unmanned flight within 30 months,” he said adding: “The mission will aim to send a three-person crew to space for a period of seven days where they will do microgravity experiments.”

ISRO officials said that the spacecraft will be placed in a low earth orbit of 300-400 km. “The programme will make India the fourth nation in the world to launch a human spaceflight mission after USA, Russia, and China,” said Minister of State Jitendra Singh who is in-charge of the Department of Space.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech announced the ‘Gaganyaan Mission’ of India’s maiden human spaceflight programme. He said, “A son or a daughter of India will go to space from Indian soil by an Indian vehicle by 2022 or sooner in time to mark India’s 75th year of Independence.”

Sivan, however, said that research and development around this mission first began in 2004. He said that the dimensions of the crew module that will transport the astronauts will be 7 metres in height and the mass will be 7 tonnes. “The astronauts can be anybody. We will have a preference for pilots but the selection and training process will be done by the Indian Air Force and the ISRO,” he said. The mission upon return will land in the Arabian Sea close to Gujarat coast,” Sivan said.
