accademic staff union of polythecnics is warning of an indefinate strike from monday next week

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is insisting on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met by next Monday.

This was made known to CAMPUSLIFE by the National Co-ordinator, South South and South East (Zone D), Mr Cyril Odidis. He stated that the Federal Government has not attended to one third of their demands.

It was gathered that the Federal Government has released six months’ arrears from July to December 2009 of the new salary upgrade following a one-week warning strike embarked by the angry teachers last week. The ASUP leader added that a meeting between the national body of the union and the Federal Government has been slated for today and tomorrow.

Mr. Odidisi, who teaches at the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, noted that the outcome of the meeting will determine the next step.

Meanwhile, Rector of the institution, Dr. Philipa Idogho, told local members of the union that she received payment of the six months’ arrears last week. Accordingly, she added, she has instructed the bursary department to ensure that individual staff bank accounts were credited the same week. She added that, to forestall a disruption of academic activities, Auchi Poly will commence implementation of the salary increase this June from internal resources "in the hope that the government will soon start funding the new salary payment".
