Why Nigerian Rice Is Expensive And Scarce - Fatimah Aliyu by 2Ebisco: 11:53am On Aug 30, 2018
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Wednesday blamed the scarcity of local rice in Nigerian markets to disconnect between integrated rice millers and the supply chain.

Who or what is responsible for the said "disconnect"?

Fatimah Aliyu, a Deputy Director, Rice Value Chain in the ministry, stated this in Abuja.

Mrs Aliyu spoke at the 2nd National Congress, Policy Dialogue and Inauguration of the Board of Trustees of Rice Assured Advocacy Forum (RAAF), facilitated by John A. Kufuor Foundation (JAKF).

She said though there was a huge market for local rice, integrated millers were reluctant to push out their products for fear of price competition with imported rice.

Mrs Aliyu was responding to complaints by representatives of some rice millers who claimed that most Nigerians preferred imported rice to local rice because of its cheap price.

The millers blamed the high price of local rice on production cost, resulting from poor power supply, high transport fare and smuggling of foreign rice.

“ There is market for Nigerian rice. There are people willing to pay the high price for it because of its high nutritional value, but they cannot get it to buy. There is that market disconnect that has to be looked into,’’ Mrs Aliyu said.

She urged stakeholders in the rice value chain under the RAAF’s platform to brainstorm on the issue and come out with suggestions on how to tackle the problem.

“We are open to all those suggestions because it is part of policy advocacy. Once you, the stakeholders, give us those suggestions, the government is going to look at them because the situation is also a problem to the government.

“Integrated millers have invested so much in the business, and even government has also invested so much in it. So, it is of importance that integrated millers succeed," she said.

The first National Deputy President of RAAF, Rafau Lawal, called for a policy to encourage consumption of Nigerian rice as is done in Tanzania and other countries.

Mr Lawal said that one of the policy measures being looked at was the branding of Nigerian shops for local rice.

NAN reports that RAAF is a national dialogue platform, aimed at harmonising rice value chain actors in Nigeria to advocate for better policies in the sector.

APC lead FG, and excuses, at first they said Asia rice was cheaper than Nigerian rice because Asian government financed local rice farmers. After budgeting money and starting CBN intervention and fertilizer subsidy, they changed story again claiming the price differences was because a large cargo of plastic rice had been warehoused in Cotonou and they were flooding our Markets. the new excuse is now the rice millers

The problem with local rice is that its too expensive because I know that Ekpoma rice which is sweeter has always been more expensive than foreign imported rice and because of its nutritional values I can tell you that people like us that have means and are well to do can never eat imported rice because its polished and striped of its nutritional value.

Electricity is the sole problem of high cost of production. Not only in rice production but in all other business so please this government should stop looking for excuses or who to blame but rather work on electricity and see all aspects of the economy grow

APC is the poorest form of government any group could have...I bet they can't manage a primary class well.
But away from APC, PDP is only better than APC,they're not the type of Government we need either.
When our local product is more expensive than imported goods....that only tells us a thing...Nigeria is lazy...Nigerians on the other hand are quite hardworking, but the government policy is only there for few people who believe they own the country.
Tin tomato is #50 which sure much than fresh tomato.
Tin milk is 200 while fresh milk is almost not available,I only tasted that once.
Titus fish is 300 while catfish is 550 (the same size)
Frozen chicken is 1400 while live/life chicken is 3500.
I can go on and on....
If our produce are not affordable, how on earth do we think we can break the international market.
Una never add shipping fee and taxes E no dey affordable for the locals...
Just imagine say Innoson cost pas Toyota.
djon78:

The problem is from our policy makers. Infact local production can generate serious economic multiplier effect but the policy makers don't care about the local ordinary man.

If the government want they can crash the price, via consumer protection council. By first crashing the price of local raw materials. Giving incentives to local producers like funds, grants and subsidies. Farmers in US and even China get subsidies from the government, thereby there products are cheap on the international/global markets. Even the Arab airlines like Emirates, Qatar, etihad are subsidised, that's why many western airlines cannot match them.
We have very wicked, dull and completely uninformed policy makers. And they don't understand that local production is the key to unlocking Nigeria's economic potential which has a scary proportion if you look at the numbers.
Na you talk am finish my brother...
Farmers in some western countries don't even pay tax and have access to better infrastructure...
We no get Just common storage facility not to talk about power and technology

Exactly !

Igbo go about social media complaining Buhari/ Fashola is not able to give them light under 3 years while praising Obasanjo / PDP that squander over 16 billion dollars with no power to show. They want Nigeria to vote Obasanjo surrogate while telling us not to politicize the issue. If Nigeria don’t politicize squandering of national wealth is it Biafra we should be politicizing ?

If rice smuggling is from the south and those benefiting from it are from the south,as in the case of cars.they would have blocked all illegal importation.

But since smuggling of rice is being done by northerners and benefited by northerners ,no solution to block them from doing so,yet some afonjas are not seeing it.

I think we are yet to police our borders properly.

Secondly, as much as we have improved in rice production, we are not producing enough. When supply goes far more than demand, the price will crash automatically. Millers may even be forced to find ways to sell rice outside the country. This is actually happening in the steel industry at the moment. Rebar (iron rods) manufacturers have begun exports because the competition in the local market is very stiff.

The Nigerian Government must be commended for their efforts so far but we need more investors in that sector. That will crash the rice prices. It won't make sense to an importer to go buy, ship and pay duties since he can get cheaper prices in the market and maybe export as well. When we have surplus production, added value chain industries will arise which will open even more opportunities in the rice industry.

In other words, we need more people investing in Rice production and Agriculture as a whole.

It is scarce because it is not being produced and as such it is not available. Something produced in large quantity cannot be scarce. Are the producers producing to have it stored until it spoiled? These people should stop their lame excuses.
