undecided ok, is everybody gonna work on different project base on their language, and then we are going to upload the video or the game itself online??, its nice if its like that, cos from there we will every
One area of specialisation, !!!
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 12:36pm On Sep 15, 2011
@lugan: yup, people are gonna work on projects that involve tools they are comfortable with. Each project will have a thread and updates including videos and demos will be posted there. If someone wants to use a different tool, he can easily find others who have knowledge of it and development can progress quickly.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by lugan: 5:38pm On Sep 15, 2011
cheesy ok then,I guess I will av to start my j2me project(2d side scrolling demo),
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 11:46pm On Sep 15, 2011
@lugan: yup. just make sure you're ready to go before inviting people to the project. You should also explain what contributions you'll be needing and what progress you're making to those who join so that your project will be understood and appreciated.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 12:09am On Sep 16, 2011
I've attached images of 2d tryout with flash and the flashpunk framework. The level in the second one was made with ogmoeditor. I was trying to make a basic AI hence the waypoint/circles around the green characters in the second image.

@lugan: What are your plans for sprites and other assets in your project. One of the problems we've been having is the lack of artists around here. Anyways, all games do not require serious graphics as the concept can be all that matters. Lets hope we can find ways to implement our ideas in fun ways quickly and easily.

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by lugan: 7:01am On Sep 16, 2011
cool @gameaddict. I'm not dealing with strong graphics, and thanks to the midp 2.0 API, the sprite class there has been made easy to draw and call, you know, any object can represent my character, I believe its step by step!!!!, and for the attachment, that's a nice sprite characters and that ur stage set is nice, at least u av started something!!!, and before I forget I'm a comic book artist(average), and when we are dealing with a large project(like halo), I know artist to consult for creation of world and character design, so that's it!!!, and plz can u reccomend a source code site for me??
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 2:30pm On Sep 16, 2011
@Lugan: Good to know you're an artist.

You can find source codes and tutorials on many sites, blogs and publisher sites.

Here's the source code link for a java game book: http://www.brackeen.com/javagamebook/ It might be tricky if you don't have the book to understand why the

author is using a particular method. Just have some fun with it; understanding will come. It includes the source for a sidescroller.

Re: Game Development: Join The Team by Tolu619: 10:07am On Sep 27, 2011
I just tried the Vulcan's Challenge. Pretty good! The 2 levels included aren't walk overs. I haven't been able to figure out what the pink gauge is yet. You should have labelled the gauges. Add a shadow to the player's character so we can measure our jumps more accurately. This is required in all third person platformers. You might want to add some music too. Kudos on the level design, the levels remind me of some levels(like the space junk galaxy) in Mario Galaxy.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by gameaddict(m): 3:58pm On Sep 27, 2011
@lugan: okay, no problem. If you're close to yaba/akoka I could help you with file downloads when we resume. I've created the first idea page here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-769009.0.html

You can post your project ideas there to inform people about it or you can create a new page.

@tolu619: Thanks for the tips. I'm restarting the vulcan project with ojukwu24 and others and will incorporate your suggestions.

We've decided to separate the general project page (this page) from the game ideas and dev page. This is to allow for better interaction and speedy development. You can view the first of the idea pages here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-769009.0.html

The pink gauge is for continuous jump. Right click to use. It's still buggy and the level has to be designed in a way that it won't make the too game easy for the player.

@Bulldog: Almost done with a multiplayer shooter. please if you're not busy, can you help with the sounds? It's a simple game with gang-like characters and urban elements. I'm trying to find a good soundtrack to set the tone of the game.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by RJones: 5:36am On Nov 02, 2011
A while back I'd been thinking of making a game along these lines. Actually had a title for it "Escape from Bakassi". It was going to be a platformer on Unity3D that'd pay homage in a way to Contra.

A little background about me. I work in the US for a well known Fortune 500 company. I've gotten a fair amount of programming and project management experience on several projects.

I've been thinking about giving some of my knowledge back by mentoring a few serious minded folks to start a proper Nigerian game development firm in 2012.

While I don't think it would be reasonable to promise immediate success, I did want to consider a 2 year focused investment in this area as I considered this enough time to do something substantial.

It seems on this thread there are quite a few people who are passionate about this. So perhaps there's a chance to get this started for real.

PM me your cell phone number if you're interested and I'll make an international call so we can chat a bit.

------

Here is my own idea of a storyline:

The government of Nigeria is having problems with groups of militants who have taken it upon themselves to terrorise the oil rich Niger-Delta. They engage in vandalism, extortion, Robbery and kidnapping.

An american oil expatriate is kidnapped. Pressure begins to mount on the government from the U.S to rescue the man. They know going all out with the Nigerian Military will endanger the captives life.

They call on the Nigerian Secret Agency(NSA) who then appoints Agent Badmus Haruna aka Baba, their most trusted and experienced agent. His mission is to find and rescue the man.
------
Agent Baba will be our actor. He is to go from one militant base to another. Because we want this short and less complex, we may just draw out 3 militant bases located maybe in a forest, building and around moutains etc. As he goes, he picks up notes/clues telling him important details. From this we will again enough knowledge to begin a RTS/FPS Game engine.

So friends, what do you think? Lets read more storylines. Its getting interest already.

Nice storyline, i proposed a similar idea but someone said it was too sensitive. If you have got the funds to hire graphics artists, i think that may just fuel up my game dev passion. I am a programmer.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by RJones: 9:04am On Nov 02, 2011
In general my take on this is topics of sensitivity should be left to the party purchasing the product. With the appropriate rating slapped people can make the best decisions for themselves.

What's your background and what languages are you comfortable with?
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 1:54pm On Nov 02, 2011
I am comfortable with web techs, if the plan is to use unity3d, javascript and c# is the language.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by RJones: 5:08pm On Nov 02, 2011
cool. i reckon a team of four would make sense to bootstrap.

1 chap who's decent with web technology. should be able to run circles around flash and should be solid or interested in becoming reasonably solid with html5.
2 chaps who are technically agnostic. with a good handle on computer science concepts and can pick up languages fairly easily from unity's requirements for javascript and c#.also wouldn't mind learning new languages like objective-c, graphics concepts like open-gl or frameworks like box3d, cocos2d etc.
1 chap who's deeply interested in 3-d modelling with blender and would be estatic if i got him a wacom tablet for digital art. should also be interested in working with special effects software like adobe aftereffects.

although it would be prudent to pay for graphics design initially, eventually it would make sense to me to develop these capabilities in-house. and I'm not expecting these four people have full knowledge of these technologies from the get go. i can teach/mentor in areas that they arent familiar with.

but what i can assure you get access to all the resources you'll need to deliver a first product in 6 months - and then we can talk about longer term prospects.
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by worldbest(m): 6:31pm On Nov 02, 2011
smiley Right now, i am deeply involved in a project. I am not sure if i can join. sad
Re: Game Development: Join The Team by RJones: 9:41pm On Nov 02, 2011
Well that's unfortunate. I'm going to lay down the gauntlet and keep this offer open for the next 6 months. If anyone thinks they fit the criteria I wrote down here and wants to work on projects that will challenge them and become the inspiration for other Nigerian programmers - come talk to me.

And by the way this is the real deal. I graduated with a Masters from Carnegie Mellon, the top Computer Science University in the United States. I specialized in Computer Security but still remember fondly the good old days downloading linux from Linkserve and Hyperia accounts we got through methods I won't print smiley. Any of the old school folks here will remember what I'm talking about. I also started with a few classmates many years ago one of the more talked about Nigerian Software firms.

I've been lucky to gain a lot of experience over my 15 years mucking around with technology and I'd like to give something back. I'd expect that this team would learn a lot from me as I will from them as we navigate the challenges and opportunities in this space. There are several creative approaches I have in mind to delivering products - and also funding this endeavor.

What you can expect to learn from me is how to market and deliver software that delights customers. And also how build, manage, deploy and deliver services that can scale to millions of users.

There seem to be a lot of smart people on this thread. And I'd feel really bad handling this with one of the bespoke game development firms over here without attempting to give back first.

What I think you all need is funding, organization and clear direction. Because this space is so wide open, nailing these three things should sufficiently increase your chance of success. The other piece of course is writing great software - but that can be taught and is a lot easier than the former.
