Rohr Recalls Success For Libya’s Double-head Clash

By Abubakar Yunusa , Abuja

Coach Gernot Rohr has handed Isaac Success a recall to the Super Eagles squad for the forthcoming back to back AFCON 2019 Qualifying matches against Libya, according to report.

Success last played for Nigeria in 2017 in a friendly game against Senegal and despite an impressive outing after coming on as a second half substitute, injuries, fitness and poor form has kept him out of the Nigerian team.

Since the start of the season, the 21 year old has turned a corner in terms of his fitness and performance as he has been involved with Watford, although mostly as a substitute in the league but in the Carabao Cup he scored twice for them before their exit in the hands of Tottenham Hotspurs on Wednesday.

Rohr is a big fan of the forward due to his physical attributes and ability to play on the flanks and as a top striker, a chance to stake a claim for a spot in the senior national team of Nigeria has now been handed to the forward.
He will be in the list of players which will be released on Tuesday against group leaders Libya in Uyo and later in Tunisia.

Meanwhile, Confederation of African Football (CAF) have finally approved NFF to have the Africa Cup of Nations’ first leg qualifier against Libya shifted to a new date and venue.
The confirmation from CAF came in a formal notification to Libyan Football Federation (LFF) that the first leg of their double-qualifier against Nigeria will now hold at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday, October 13.
The formal notification from CAF to LFF in effect confirms that it will no longer hold at Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on October 12, while the reverse fixture in the Group E tussle between both countries for 2019 AFCON tickets will now be on October 16 in Tunisia.

This is a major victory for Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, who repeatedly expressed concerns about the small size of Ahmadu Bello Stadium pitch.
Rohr buttressed his worries when he met top shots of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during The Best FIFA Football Awards 2018 in London on September 24.
Incidentally, while the Franco-German feared that the ABS pitch is not up to standard and his players would not be comfortable playing on the turf, NFF top shots had already expressed worries about possible overcrowding by fans at the stadium in Kaduna.

It would be recalled that CAF slammed Nigeria with a $5,000 fine for allowing excess spectators at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium for an AFCON qualifier against Egypt in March 2016.

Mediterranean Knights Invade Uyo On October 11th

Footballlive.ng has gathered that Libya’s team, Mediterranean Knights will fly into Nigeria on October 11th, ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations first leg qualifier against the Super Eagles on October 13 in Uyo.
Information in this regard was provided by Libyan Football Federation (LFF) spokesman, Fatih Chaboulos, who said the squad will camp in Tunisia for seven days before boarding a chartered flight to Nigeria for next Saturday’s game at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
Chaboulos further confirmed that the camp in Tunisia will hold from October 4th to the 11th, when the team will travel on a private plane to keep a date with the Super Eagles.
The match day three fixture will be followed by a return leg just three days later at the 18,000-capacity Stade Taïeb Mhiri in Sfax, Tunisia on Tuesday, 16th October.
Libya manager, Adel Amrouche is already making plans for the second leg as well, as hence the decision to open camp in Tunisia, where his 22-man squad is expected to acclimatise for a week.
Libya top Group E of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers with four points, same as South Africa, who have an inferior goal difference, but The Knights are a point ahead of Nigeria.
The Eagles, whose players are to report in Akwa Ibom State capital, Uyo Monday, October 8, will have to eke out at least four points from the upcoming matches in order to upstage Libya at the top of the table.

Five Takeaways From Super Eagles Squad For AFCON Qualifiers Against Libya

Published: October 02, 2018

The Nigeria Football Federation on Monday announced Head coach of the Super Eagles Gernot Rhor's squad for the double header 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on October 13 and 16 against Libya.
Izuchukwu Okosi takes a cursory look at the five takeaways from Rhor's team for the matches.

1. Rhor not willing to invite fans' favourites.
There has been calls for the invitation of certain players to the Super Eagles but Rhor seems adamant that he has his mind made up on the composition of his team.
Afelokhai, Okiemute Odah (goalkeepers) Arnuad Danjuma, Moses Odubajo, Imoh Ezekiel, Ikouwem Udoh Utin, Mfon Udoh, The Nwakali brothers (Kelechi and Chidiebere), Stephen Eze, Musa Mohammed, Usman Mohammed to name a few from a wide range are some of the players Nigerian football technocrats and fans alike feel can impact positively to the team but rarely get any chance.
For instance, Utin is a NATURAL left back and has been in splendid form for Enyimba but the coach still prefers a Bryan Idowu who is right footed and has struggled in recent matches.
Utin's club mate, Theophilus Afelokhai continues to shine in goal for the 'Peoples Elephant' in the CAF Confederation Cup and instructively makes Ikechukwu Ezenwa (who is a good goalkeeper it must be said) sit on the bench.
But Rhor and his crew are seemingly not keen to hearken to the cries of Nigerians.

2. The Eagles have more pace in the wings without Victor Moses.
Since his announcement of retirement from the Nigerian national team, Victor Moses is fast becoming a forgotten man.
The Chelsea winger (third choice at his position behind Willian and Pedro Rodriguez) at Chelsea has not had the trust of the Blues head coach Maurizio Sarri who does not consider him good enough for the right back role, or the wing back, which Moses was deployed under Antonio Conte.
The likes of Samuel Kalu, and the now fit Moses Simon have abundance of pace down the wings and will bring competition, dynamism and youthfulness to the team. There is also the experienced Ahmed Musa who was Nigeria's star player at the World Cup in Russia.
Furthermore they are less likely to choose the matches they prefer to play for Nigeria unless injured or RESTED by Rhor.

3. Mikel's omission: injury related or gradual phaseout?
Captain of the Super Eagles John Mikel Obi is again omitted from the Super Eagles team for the matches against Libya.
The inspirational leader was not in the team for the September 8 game against Seychelles ostensibly due to injury but the question asked by some concerned Nigerians now is if it is not a gradual way of retiring the former Chelsea star.
Perhaps a clearer picture will emerge when the Super Eagles are billed to play South Africa.
Mikel has not publicly stated that he is quitting the national team but the handwriting seems to be on the wall.
Going by his response to this question after Nigeria's elimination from the 2018 World Cup, he is likely to retire after the 2019 AFCON but before June 30 next year when the final of the tournament will be played, Mikel Obi is still needed in the Eagles.

4. Super Eagles Squad of 24 Not Ideal
Only 14 players will be play on match day and not 24.
The Nigeria Football Federation have always complained about paucity of funds to prosecute some assignments and inviting as much as 24 players with just a week away from the matches could well be too much.
A total of 21 players would have sufficed. Perhaps 18 advocated by some persons is not advisable due to injury concerns. Excluding three names could have meant avoiding more expenses.
The qualifiers are not the tournament itself when a large pool of players are needed to form a preliminary squad.

5. Wing Play In Rhor's Plans
Gernot Rhor has on his team players like Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Samuel Kalu and Henry Onyekuru who are very fast wingers who sometimes play as strikers.
The earlier plan was to play the home leg of the qualifiers in Kaduna but that has changed now with the bigger Akwa Ibom Stadium now preferred as Rhor wants his team to play expansively with the fast wingers on board since the Libyans are likely to go defensive.
The plan is to run the Libyans ragged with speed and that means a likely win for the Super Eagles if only the goals start coming early in the games.

Why Ighalo is ahead of Isaac Success in Super Eagles

60 By admin -
October 11, 2018, 3:01 pm 

China-based striker Odion Ighalo is ahead of Watford front man Isaac Success in the Super Eagles because he has formed a better understanding with the rest of the team having been part of the team for much longer, according to Gernot Rohr.
Success has been handed another chance with the Eagles after his debut in March 2017 against Senegal, but he is not likely to start ahead of Ighalo in Saturday’s AFCON qualifier against Libya in Uyo.
“We don’t have the time in three, four days to change our offensive formation, but we invited (Isaac) Success, who plays in the same position,” Rohr said.
“The problem is that in four days, will he find an understanding with the other players?”
Will Success Take His Eagles Chance?
The Eagles coach also argued that Ighalo has regained his form after a difficult World Cup campaign.
“He had a World Cup which was not so easy for him,” he said.
“But he’s doing well with his club, he has more than 20 goals for his club, and that is why we invited him again.”
