I just take myself off groups and anyone that posts too many stupid clips I block them

Oga this one is different. When you set it not to auto download and you later download it yourself it will show in your gallery. The main point here is the gallery view. In this case you view the pics on whatsapp after download but it won't be seen in your phone gallery. I hope i have helped?

This is not just about auto or manual download of media. If you manually download the media, you can view it (perhaps like thumbnails) but it won't save in your phone gallery

That individual contact is a long thing. I have over 500 contacts do u expect me to uncheck them one by one?
