I have noticed a certain mentality dat the yorubas n some northeners have, i went to ibadan recently n alot of people were calling me 'omo ibo' wen i correct them im not igbo, im 4rm rivers state, they will say 'ehn its the same thing', some will even follow you to argue your own tribe,lol, they will say that there are 3 major tribes in nigeria and as far as they know all edo, niger delta and calabar pepo are igbo.
Please I didnt open this thread to quarrel with anybody or cause disunity o, we are all brothers in nigeria, i just want to know what gave them(especially the yorubas) that funny mindset

The same yoruba will also tell you that Rivers people are not Igbo people when you mention Biafra their night-mare.

they do it 4 me too, n remember one esan girl, osakwe, who got tired of telling correcting them that she's not igbo

the more funny thing is the basis some of them use to classify south south as igbo, u'll hear things like 'all your men tie wrapper, all of you eat yellow garri, all of you do this n that' very funny reasons

but actually if u look at it, SE n SS look relatively close to outsiders, so i kind off understand their confusion

I'm mostly close to people from upland Rivers and outside Rivers State, being called Igbo doesn't bother them that much. Due to linguistic and cultural reasons.

Let me start from language, in SS/SE, pidgin is the everyday language, but it'll be very difficult to see an average Yoruba man living in Yoruba land speaking pidgin. because of this if a Yoruba man see a non Yoruba man speaking pidgin fluently, he'll be quick to jump to conclusion that he's an Ibo.
But I can see you're just trying to point the blame finger to Yoruba alone, where as it's general to every tribe in Nigeria. If a typical man from SS or SE see a man from Bida town in Niger state, he won't think twice before calling him an Hausa man which is very wrong because he's a Nupe by tribe.
I'm presently serving in Kebbi state, around a town called Zuru, the people there will always correct us (Corpers from SW, SS & SE) that we should not called them Hausa, that they are Dakaranchi, but we can't differentiate because they have many things in common.

CONCLUSION:
It's not a tribe thing to do that mistake, we all have our share in it not only Yoruba. To an IBO man, everybody from Borno state is an Hausa man, which is wrong, the majority are Kanuri tribe.

i don't think yoruba people have meetings with northerners or each other to decide if you are ibo or south south . It depends on cultural education. How many of them in ibadan or us have even been to the Niger delta or been taught at school about the history of the ibiobio, nupe, ijaw, itsekiri, nri (igbo) or bini?

It's like how we call Japanese or Korean people chinko, or pakistani, sri lankan and bangladeshi people indian. What you are complaining about is informal / erroneous education/socialisation.

What is wrong with been called Igbo? Is it a crime to be Igbo? If they call you Igbo just embrace it. Abi you have problem?

If you are in the North, and you are not a member nation in the Yoruba League, popularly known as Yoruba Commonwealth, then you are Hausa.
