70% of Nigerian university students can't do without drugs, so they should forget about that drug test of a thing unless they want their school to be empty.

First of all, where is the burnt hostel?
Secondly, it's wrong in a respect for the students to have taken that step, they will pay. I mean, it's just suspension. Were they expecting the school to clap for them for testing positive to drugs?

Such test is not needed in a university, Its an intrusion to their privacy. Like I said, They are adults

The primary objective is academic excellence.

The school is yet to complete the test and this is already happening...am not sure 40% of the school pupils are authentic students.

If they look like suspected drug addicts then the school has the right to round them up and get them tested. This only sounds fair considering the fact that they can be suspended only on the basis of strong suspicion.

Well,I can assure you that this news not all true.
Less than 50 were sent home,after failing dope test,then the few bad ones wanted to cause mayhem because of this. Mattresses were burnt inside a room,and the fire was extinguished by the staffs before it caused further-hostel wasn't burnt. The new administration is seriously doing all within dr power to purge the school, so it will be a peaceful place for serious ones and corrective haven for those that are willing to change.All the same what happened was not as bad as it is portrayed by the op.

Well, schools in the real sense are NOT only concerned about academic performance! In fact academic comes SECOND in the purpose schools are established! Producing MORALLY UPRIGHT products comes first. If you are a graduate, go and check your certificate. You will see that the certificate was awarded after finding you both morally and academically qualified. The academics is second. So some private schools are now paying attention to the moral aspect which most schools have abandoned

so, how do suspect drug addicts look like?
what empirical evidence do you look out for to suspect someone of drug use or drug addiction?
whose function is it to suspect students of drug use or misuse?
what drugs are they going to be looking for?

Analgesics,
Hypnotics,
stimulants,
Amphetamines,
cannabis? etc.
Did you tell the students at the point of admission that at any time during the school period, they can be rounded up like common criminals and subjected to a humiliating drug use test at the instance of a paranoid schizophrenic masquerading as a vice chancellor or students affairs officer ?
How can you support such an invasion of young people's privacy , but feel outraged when police officers ask you to open your phone or laptop for search.
By your own analogy, if you look like a thief or kidnapper , you should be subjected to any search as deemed necessary by security agents.

These boys probably know what they are doing, they refused but didn't fail... They probably engaged in this act to buy time for the drugs to leave their body system in a couple of days before appealing and agreeing to the test which might come back negative then.

Drug tests when under arrest or criminal investigation is also in order.
summary, irrational and spontaneous demand for drug tests without a direct cause is not in order.
