The Kenyan government, on Tuesday, announced the appointment of 91-year-old former vice president, Moody Awori, into the oversight board to manage the Sports, Art and Social Development Fund.

According to a gazette report by Finance Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich, Mr. Awori and six other members would be tasked with preparing and submitting quarterly reports as well as developing infrastructure and facilitating Team Kenya for their national assignment among other roles, reports CitizenTV Kenya.

This appointment has been met with outrage by Kenyans, especially on Twitter, where they have condemned the decision of their government.

According to them, there are a lot of jobless Kenyan youths better suited to hold the position and who are more deserving of the chance.

They further criticized President Uhuru Kenyatta for failing to deliver on his promise to the youths and, instead, recycling retired civil servants who have served in past governments and are now of old age.

A few of them even congratulated Mr. Awori for his appointment, albeit sarcastically, with one Twitter user, @mistatash saying he brings “tonnes of experience, relevance and vigour to serve 80 per cent of the population composed of the youth.”

Another Twitter user, James Wamathai tweeted, “Moody Awori is older than 50 million people in Kenya. Only 19,000 people are older than him. Moody Awori turned 18 in 1946. Most of our parents weren’t even born then.”

Dan Aceda said, “Thank you Uhuru Kenyatta for showing (yet again) that your administration is for and about the Youth of Kenya. God Bless you. God Bless Kenya.”
