In 1457, the king of Nupe invaded Oyo and sacked the capital where Onigbogi, the Alaafin (king), fled to the land of the Ibariba and died there.

The Oyo Empire had no Alaafin for 85 years until Ofinran became Alaafin in 1542.

Expansion

From 1650 onward, the Oyo Empire entered a period of expansion, where it would extend its rule over most communities between the Volta River in the west to Benin and the Niger River in the east. The expansion of the Empire was made possible by the adept use of calvary and the use of part-time military forces recruited from its tributary states.

The height of Oyo's militaristic expansion was in 1748, following the subjugation of the Kingdom of Dahomey, which occured in two phases (1724–30, 1738–48). The empire then began trading with European merchants on the coast through the port of Ajase (Porto-Novo).

This Edoloaded guy and his multiple markers on NL funny die.
If Yoruba talk about Benin now, he will say we are obsessed with them, but he had to go dig out some story from the 15th century about Oyo empire, or do you want me to remind you of how one of your Benin Obas was killed by Igbos in Agbor?

My concern is with how the dates were determined. 1457? 1542?

He was fighting fiercely and bravely against British occupation of his kingdom. A war in which the British suffered huge casualties, a war that reminded the British that there is truly a powerful and mighty kingdom in Africa. A the British won due to superior weapons.
The British didn’t steal the bronzes, it’s their spoils of war.
And unlike the Yorubas and Igbos whose historical kingdoms are dead to them, Benin Kingdom is still very much alive in every Edos
