No fewer than 527,000 candidates representing 40 per cent of those who took part at the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will be admitted by 400 tertiary institutions in the country by October this year,the Regstrar of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, (JAMB), Professor Dibu Ojerinde has disclosed.

About 1.3 million candidates sat for the examination nationwide in April this year.

Professor Ojerinde, who stated this at the second combined technical committee meeting on admissions to tertiary institutions at Obafemi Awolowo University Ile – Ife, said for the board to be transparent and to achieve its objective of increasing access to tertiary institutions, all admissions were to be processed quickly and in systematic manner so that more people would be absorbed.

The registrar charged over 400 tertiary institutions in the country to comply with the laid down guidelines which stipulates a sixty/forty (60:40) science/arts ratio for universities and seventy/thirty (70:30) technology/non – technology ratio for polytechnics.

He also reminded all federal institutions that the ratio of forty – five / thirty – five / twenty (45:35:20) for merit, catchments and Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) should be in full force.

WHy the hell do we reserve 20% for 'Educationally less privileged'? Everyone should battle for the limited slots on merit alone.

I'm really sorry for a lot of people.

And this is how we will be one of the 20 largest economies in the world in ten years time. Now tell me how this is different from zoning? What has a persons place of origin - and by origin it is meant ancestry which such a person may never have visited, not even birthplace or where basic education was received - got to do with whether or not he/she should go into a university to pursue a particular course of knowledge. Where in the process someone else more deserving is denied a position. I have alway said and will continue to say; "Until we are ready to drop all these 'Federal Character' indices, we are not going anywhere".

So many parts of this story highlight the incompetence of a lot of our administrators. In fairness to them, maybe I'm the one who doesn't understand the dynamics or there's a bigger picture that I'm not seeing. But I fail to understand why a Polythecnic should offer an Art course in the first place. But here we are talking about ratios. Then a Professor comes along presumably after a 'technical committe meeting' with - permit to guess - fellow professors and in the midst of this impending crises, is telling me how important transparency is and how in order to achieve it, things must be done quickly and systematically. What does that mean?

bleeped up Exams, I took this bloody exam thrice, and only applied to Uni of Newcastle australia, na one hand , now im studying marketing, don't waste ur time n money on utme, jamb, post-ume , and any crap they r offering

Education process in Nigeria is poorly organized.
If you don't have money don't bother yourself make money and then go and study.
it boils my stomach seeing what students go through these days.
May God have mercy.

Why waste ur money on jamb and putme year in year out..their ar some private uni that pay less than some state uni and private uni ar always beta..just do research n stop burning ur parents money
