*LIST OF CHURCH OWNED/AFFILIATED-LICENSED, AWAITING LICENSE AND PROPOSED UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA

Compiled by Leke Beecroft

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:14‬

The Church has consistently played her role as the source of light in the nation. Despite hues and cries about the emergence of private universities, it is an irony that most public universities are presently on strike while church owned ones are functional. Presently some of the best universities in the nation are run by churches. They can only get better. The impact of Christian universities are not readily apparent at the moment; however I make bold to say that in a decade from now, the gap would have been clear and the difference between the church owned and other universities would have been widened in favour of the Church.

Universities need adequate funding in order to be maintained and carry out research activities among others. Presently most public universities are grappling with these so much that there are plans to increase public university fees to about N250,000 per student while provision would now be made for student loans to be repaid at 5 per cent interest. This was the very reason church owned universities were criticized from the onset.

There are presently a total of 79 approved private universities out of a total 169 universities in Nigeria, 39 of which are church owned/affiliated. A further 15 are in different stages that would lead to approval.

It ought to have been completed I think but issues came up with the community as I heard they demanded to be giving money for the project to continue.Winners didn't want to give them money as the land was given by the former governor's admin on their request for winners to build a university there. But I was informed all issues had been sorted and the project was on track.

The name of the university would be Crown University, located in Tinapa, Calabar with a focus on maritime studies.

Landmark has better infrastructure than Covenant, excellent road networks, way bigger college buildings, far more serene campus but a very underpopulated campus. The staff - student ratio is 1 - 6 which is better than that of CU. But the problem it has is that it has failed to gain enough popularity and still relies heavily on the church to subsidize her budgets.

We are both saying the same thing sir! What about research output? What about marketing and promotional activities? You heard Papa talking of church marketing this morning...The kind of media exposure convenant university enjoyed should be offered Landmark.

Well, to be sincere I don't think Covenant really did any much media push. The first five private unis(Madonna, Babcock, Igbinedion, Bowen, Covenant) enjoyed pioneer status. People knew them, didnt trust them but enrolled as public universities where on the brink of total collapse brought about by heightened tensions caused by cult groups, industrial actions, student and indigene crisis.

Over the years Madonna quickly dwindled and igbinedion continues to decline. Bowen stagnated and failed to use the boom years to her advantage. To make matters worse better private universities began to spring up between 2009 - present. Covenant on the other hand had a wealthier owner who concentrated resources on not so many programmes, created a very unique identity. In 2012 it translated into a research driven university and would continue to attract attenrion and grow exceedingly.

Babcock on the other hand is owned by the Adventists who are probably the best church with the capacity to run a university. And this shows that despite having a 20 year loan to repay is till doing well.

The relevance of a university is not in how many poor people's kids it educated. If it were, Ahmadu Bello Uni would be relevant than Stanford. The relevance is in solving the many problems facing humanity. You may not be able to attend John Hopkins University but in many ways John Hopkins has benefited you and many other poor people across the globe. They do this when they create vaccines, innovate new ways to do surgery etc.

Have you ever wondered why scholarships are giving to indigent brilliant kids in many ivy leagues and not poor dull kids. It is not because they pity them but that those poor brilliant kids should come and improve the mandate of the universities by contributing to research.

As it is here in Nigeria, the public universities have more problems than the society it is supposed to help because govt and the people live under the illusion of free higher education. We have sacrificed the relevance and functionality of universities in the name of access. If the church unis focus on giving access they would also face the problem the public universities are challenged with in greater proportion and would never have the opportunity to make a mark like their counterparts outside the shores of naija.

Don't ask a university if it is free, ask if it is relevant. Expensive is a price we should be willing to pay to have functional universities.

Instead of creating universities with different names, why not create one and make the rest affiliations just like Oxford. Some churches have more than one universities.

Special shout out to those whose parents contributed to building these universities.

Hope your parents can afford to send you there?

You know the funny thing, the children of the founders of these universities won't attend them.

Tomorrow is Sunday. Carry your first fruit bribe to the church o, the god you people worship needs money but I can assure you it's not the true God.

How many members of the churches can afford to send their children to these universities?

The truth is that many of them CAN afford the universites.

But to answer your real question....why can't these churches allow students to go to school for N20000 per annum?

Because if they did...many of their universites would be bankrupt in one year.

Church unviersities have to raise their funding. Even mega rich churches like Living faith don't have access to the kind of funding that government does to subsidise education.

Also, many of them rich churches have to pay unviersity staff at par with what they pay in public universites. And in addition, many of these churches also have other businesses, as well as pastors, chruch workers, etc who also have to be paid...and who employ lots of people....that have to be paid.

Universites are also very expensive.Average budgets of well funded universites can be above $100million yearly. Many churches don';t have that cash at hand....and even if Papa sold all his fine jets, etc...that would only yield enough cash....for one year. Then fees have to go up again.

I know...I wish educaiton was free. But it can't. Back when our parents went to University for free...getting into university was much harder than it was. It took 2 years...during which you wrote O level, A level, and whatever matric exam the university you wanted to enter set for you. And you must pass at a high level (One of my uncles got 5 credits at Olevel...in the right subjects too. Back then, it was enough for him to get into a teacher's training college. Not that he regretted it...he retired as a Principal a few years ago).

Now, entry to unviersity has become easier. Millions more students are in university than they were in the 1970s. And the funding is becoming more and more difficult. So, fees. Or we end up with half baked graduates...or we pay professors N30000 as salary...and expect them to grin and bear it.
