An update on the ongoing strike by The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has it that the Federal Government had met one of its major demands.

According to the ASUU boss, the union had received the certificate of operation for Nigerian University Pension Management Company, NUPEMCO, from the National Pension Commission.

The refusal of the regulatory agency to approve the teachers’ union’s pension commission for operation has been one of the major issues in the dispute between ASUU and the Federal Government.

After receiving the certificate, ASUU boss went ahead to notify the members of the achievement. In his words, he said, “Dear Comrade, We collected the final letter of approval of NUPEMCO operational license at about 11.20a.m in PENCOM office. Profound appreciation goes to all who prepared the ground and made this possible."

“While congratulating all our members for this landmark achievement of the union, we also thank them for their patience. The struggle continues! Biodun Ogunyemi.”

Earlier, Prof. Ogunyemi told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that the leadership was still consulting with its members over offers made by the federal government.

ASUU should know that this particular strike action has failed. Some universities are already open and running normal academic sessions so what are they still waiting for to call off their meaninglesss routine strike actions. They should find a soft landing to save their face and call of the strike without further delay.

Over the years ASUU has become a recurring national event. They have shown that their real problem is not government funding nor all the problems they reel out each time they want to embark on strike action. Their real problem is within themselves. They lack cohesion and focus. Some of their members while they go on strike at the federal universities do still work normally at the private universities and run thier private businesses secretly, so they lose nothing while the strike lasts, only the students academic work suffers.
Infact partisan politics dwells within the union, because of the national and sensitive nature of the youths which they lecture, they know the huge effects their strike action generates so they use their strike actions to make political statements.

Therefore, the usual ASUU strikes has become meaningless and a national embarrassment to the nation as a whole.

ASUU needs now to devise another strategy to make their case because federal government has become immune to their strikes.

As usual the federal government will make some paper promise which will never be kept and some few months from now, ASUU will come back again with another baseless strike action.

Maybe until the students who are the real victims of this routine strike actions begin to take their destinies in their hands by doing the needful. That is when they will learn to strike purposefully.
