When people think of video game adjectives, their minds may first go to words such as "exciting" or "scary" or "fun" or "gory." That's the kind of stuff people think about when they think about video games. Then there are some games that try to be funny, although their success rate may be somewhat intermediate. When you think about video games, though, do you think of the word "romantic?" Maybe it ought to.

Romantic video games are often ignored in the unfortunate gaming landscape. Sure, slashing zombies or jumping on small mushroom men is fun, but don't overlook the power of romance. It's not as though these games aren't fun. There are actually some games that are exciting and romantic adventures. You don't have to pick the two. So if you want to exercise your shipping muscles or simply invest yourself emotionally in a good, old - fashioned love story, these games are some of the most romantic you'll find.

#10: Uncharted's underlying love story

People think of the Uncharted games primarily as Nathan Drake's globetrotting adventures, something like an Indiana Jones figure. Although Drake travels the world in search of treasure, there is also a love story that spans our hero and investigative journalist Elena Fisher's series.

It's an imperfect pairing, but in a way that makes it romantic, even if you're more interested in treasure hunting.

While Nathan's relationship with Elena flourishes throughout the series, it's the fourth game, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which seemed to grab people for its romance. The Pony Tricks website called it "a flowing banner for romance right." In Uncharted 4, their relationship is not perfect, but that's part of what made it resonate with players. Their story didn't end with marriage or ending with a storybook. It extended beyond that, and they're even apart for a while in Uncharted 4. They have a game reunion that will surely touch the hearts of anyone who cares even a little about Nathan and Elena.

#9: Max & Sona: Max Payne

From old - school Parisian love stories to a film noir drenched, and the perfect story of ' one man and his wife ' that's done a thousand times. The writers at Remedy really love their conventions on cinematic storytelling, although Max Payne reconciled the vast majority of his dialog with comic strip scenes. This, however, helped to show and introduce Max and Mona together - the latter literally being a mysterious femme fatale that occasionally emerges from the shadows and slowly dominates Max's life. There's a great moment in MP2 where Mona essentially comes back from the dead, only to ask Max if he sees a ghost or not.

#8: Final Fantasy IX's romance begins with an almost kidnapping

Oddly do a love story begins when one of the people is nearly kidnapped. That's what FFIX was like The storytelling world is a little bit kind to such circumstances, though. It helps Princess Garnet to be kidnapped in Final Fantasy IX and is happy to escape the city. This brings her into the realm of Zidane, the charming rogue / theft, and a romance begins to flourish.

A topic on the IGN message boards asks the question, "Does Final Fantasy IX have the best love story ever?" Certainly there are those who would answer with a resounding "yes." It's the end of the game that really ramps up the level of romance to get it onto this list. Princess Garnet, who was saved from danger, finds out in an epilog that Zidane, whom she thought was dead, is actually one of the actors in the play she watches. It's a classic piece of fairy tale storytelling, with a happy ending for the princess and her savior. This is not the most realistic entry on this list, but who can resist such a denouement?

#7:The many loves of Persona 4

For an American audience, Persona 4 can be a little hard to navigate, as the game has a strong Japanese feel to it. That said, if you're willing to take a shot, it can be a romantic journey, especially if you're a teenager like the characters in the game and maybe you don't have a ton of real - life dating experience.

In Persona 4, there's a lot going on, including a mystery of murder. In addition, however, there is a dating simulator as part of the game, which is particularly inclusive on the LGBTQ front. From a life lesson perspective, adults may not get as much from the game as teenagers, but there is still plenty of romance to find. The stories are also detailed, making the romance feel even more earned and impressive, as you watch these characters grow together during the playthrough.

#6: Life is strange, but also romantic

Life Is Strange: Before the subtitle of the Storm feels suitable, since this game takes place three years before the original Life is Strange. This is one of those episodic adventure games that has become increasingly popular, and while the burgeoning romance between the protagonist Chloe Price and her potential love Rachel Amber is throughout the game, the second episode is romantic.

Chloe and Rachel act together in Shakespeare's The Tempest (a hat tip to that subtitle again) in the second episode, which then leads to a great romantic moment between the two. You have the option of kissing Rachel for the first time in the game at this time. If you do, it will be quite clear why life is weird: Before the storm is on this list. Even if you're not a teenager, you can still appreciate Before the Storm's romance if you remember those early days of first love and early crushes. The characters may be young, but they have universal emotions.

#5: Gone Home handles romance in a whole different way

Many of these games appear to be focused on teenage romance, which may not appeal to adult gamers. This is especially true if from a romantic point of view, your own personal teenage years were perhaps not the most pleasant. Unfortunately, this is the case for many, if not all, teenagers, which makes adherence to the complications of teenage feelings so rewarding for Gone Home.

Gone Home is also worthy of credit for the fresh way in which a romantic story is told. You learn about your romance in the game by finding notes and scraps of paper around the house of your family. The game doesn't hold your hand either, because you can find the clues out of order, or you can't find them. Gone Home is all the more efficient. It takes a really special game to get you invested so emotionally and to race your heart when you don't even see the characters and watch them interact. Sometimes it's the romance detritus that most touches us.

#4: Love and rockets

You should definitely check out To the Moon if you want a romantic video game. That's because it's a romance game. It's not a game side element, you don't have to work to enjoy it. To the Moon is a game of romance all the time. In addition, booting is a particularly great one.

Strangely enough, the game is so affecting even if you don't play any of the paramours. You play a doctor to implant the memory of a dying man named Johnny into the moon. You start learning about his dead wife River. The game focuses on Johnny and River, and you sit back and enjoy the ride. Weeping is not a bad thing at times: It can actually be wonderful and cathartic. Johnny and River's story is sometimes tragic, sometimes beautiful, but still romantic.

#3: Stardew Valley, the best love story on a farm since Green Acres

Stardew Valley involves a lot of agriculture, after all, it is designed to be in the Harvest Moon vein, but it also involves a lot of romance. You're looking for love in the game, but love is the key word. Your character is looking for a partner, which takes real time and effort.

There's a lot of courting in Stardew Valley, as you make orders and give your potential mate gifts. If you succeed, though, you can marry your love. Of course, if you purchase the Mermaid's Pendant to give them. It's not really like real life, of course. What is life like is that romance in the game is not simple or simple. Your interest in love may reject you. In addition, if you don't pay enough attention to your spouse, they can leave you.

#2: . Geralt & Triss - The Witcher

One of the many things that helped Andrzej Sapkowski to endear thousands to the story of The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia - in addition to delivering what essentially became the video game equivalent of Game of Thrones - was to write mature and related characters - despite their fantastic setting. The fact that Geralt hunts gargantuan beasts for a living and Triss is a powerful spellcaster doesn't matter when the two are together, leading to a certain bathhouse sex scene going down in the history of gaming as when this kind of thing was done correctly.

Triss and Geralt effortlessly give off the atmosphere of knowing they're destined for each other, and although The Witcher 3 will see more of the fan - favourite Ciri potentially siding with Geralt, there's no denying the long - term relationship between him and Triss that you've spent hundreds of hours in the company.

#1: Back to Final Fantasy to close things out

If you want a realistic romance depiction, Final Fantasy X may not be the best choice. Final Fantasy games, to put it mildly, are not known to be down to Earth. Romance does not always have to be realistic, however, and romance fans can be found all over the internet praising the love story of Final Fantasy X between Yuna and Tidus.

The two don't just declare their love, unlike some games and stories. At first glance, it's not love. No, over time, their connection is building. We're watching them fall for each other gradually. In fact, the game takes its romance seriously and allows it to develop slowly, which certainly helps gamers to invest as they proceed. Of course, the infamous laughing scene with Yuna and Tidus can still be ridiculous, but everything else about this romance works.

The games of Final Fantasy are famous for their epic nature. Why would their romances differ? If you enjoy the bombast in your romance, a summoner's story and his guardian could be in your heart, and you wont be mad about it.
