Diesel as a fuel contains more energy. In other words burning 1 unit of diesel generates more energy than burning same amount of petrol. Hence, you need less fuel which makes it more efficient. Diesel engine takes in more air during combustion process, hence there is enough oxygen for complete combustion of the fuel.
