The dichotomy (or let’s call it discrimination) between graduates who hold bachelor’s degree (BSc) and those with Higher National Diploma (HND) from polytechnics in Nigeria has been a plague on our higher education system for a while now. BSc holders have been considered more valuable to the workforce than their polytechnic counterparts, despite the two groups spending the same amount of time to earn their certificates.

The education sector and the labour market have been under pressure to remove the separation, with vocal protests dating as far back as 2014. In fact, there have been a few bills passed on the floor of the National Assembly to this effect, but the impact has remained at zero. Employers at all levels have continued to treat university graduates as the only ones with capable hands.

Again this Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a bill which abolished the existing dichotomy between the polytechnics’ HND and the Bachelor of Science degree from universities.
