The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said that rail passenger traffic dropped in the first quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2018.

The company said that 723,995 people travelled by rail in the first quarter of this year, compared to 748,345 people, who travelled in the same period last year.

The information is contained in the Rail Transportation Data of the NBS, posted on the website of the company.

According to the NBS, the figures represents -3.25 per cent decline year-on-year and -3.05 per cent decline quarter-on-quarter.

The NBS said there was also decline in the volume of goods and cargo moved by rail in the first quarter of 2019.

It said that a total of 54,099 tonnes of cargo were moved by rail in the first quarter of this year, compared to the 79,750 carried in the first quarter of 2018.

Revenue generated from passengers in the first quarter of 2019 was put at N520.79 million as against N507.49 in the first quarter of 2018.

Similarly, the revenue generated from goods/cargo in first quarter of 2019 was put at N102.58 million as against N84.40 million in the first quarter of 2018.

The NBS said that data for the report was provided by the Nigerian Railway Corporation and subsequently verified and validated by the NBS. (NAN)

At least the revenue is up for both cargo and passenger rail. I dont see why cargo rail is dropping by 20% considering how bad roads are. That should be explained and remedied. Its weird passager traffic generates more revenue than cargo. I heard its the opposite in most countries. The government also subsidizes passengers rail tickets.

What does other income consist off and why is crashing 70%?

What do you mean? They're making more revenue despite the dips. The high point in cargo traffic was in 2011 but they're not far off. Passenger traffic still 1 million below it peak in 2014. The government is making more revenue than those periods.

My only issues are ticket subsidies and double digit drop in cargo traffic.

In any case, I thought it was always being published that the entire Kaduna are avoiding the roads and hopping on the train to Abuja.

How come the volume is lower today?

First quarter is an election quarter, so it is expected.

I think the ticket sales guys found a way to cheat the system, the government should pay some attention to them especially the cargo part because the roads are still very bad and I believe the rail is a better option so why the drop in "recorded" sales?

Restaurant and bar services both inside the train and at the stations
Third party advertisement inside the train, stations and also on the website
Baggage space storage inside the stations and also inside the train that are paid for.
Use of toilets or bathroom at the stations which are usually paid for.
Some magazines, newspapers or items can also be sold at the train stations.
Car parking services for travelers and renting of spaces to third party businesses like restaurant or retail store.

I can say for a fact that this data is a lie and clear reflection of the corruption going on in the rail way sector. You need to see people traveling from Abuja to kd daily by train especially after the issue of kidnapping started on that road. More coaches have been added, more trips per day etc.
