The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) will commence issuance of residence permits to foreign nationals in the next three months as it moves to expel millions of illegal immigrants living in the country.

Comptroller-General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, disclosed this during the passing out ceremony of the 44th Superintendent Basic Course for 396 trained officers from the Immigration Training School, Kano.

According to him: “In the next three months, the Service would commence issuance of Residence Permits to Foreign Nationals resident in the country and anybody who failed to possess his own before the expiration of the stipulated time faces deportation.

“In the face of serious insecurity facing the country, the only option left for the service is the issuance of Permits for all Foreign Nationals living in the country.

“In the face of global reality coupled with the insurgency and other serious security threats, Nigeria must take all necessary steps in protecting its sovereignty for the citizens to go about their lawful businesses in peace.”

Babandede noted the Service has taken serious steps in ensuring “our borders are protected and Nigeria becomes safer for business and encourage the inflow of foreign direct investments without undermining national security.”

He said they have so far trained 611 officers in Modern Border Management in Kano alone, adding the Service is training another batch of 1000 officers, The Nation reports

The Immigration boss also stated that the Federal Government has approved the establishment of e-border with the upgrade of passenger clearance system, installation of MIDAS, establishment of the border patrol to FOB and the ongoing Technology Building.

Commandant of the Kano Immigration School, CIS Rasheed Segun Adegoke said the school has witnessed unprecedented capacity development of infrastructure and training of manpower.

He added that they have since reintroduced Field-Trip for Cadets in line with the new validated curriculum.

They have their work cut out for them. This issue has been ignored way too long. It only matters to anyone during elections when they remember illegal immigrants voting or when they're commiting crimes. I dont know if there's an official estimate on how many illegal immigrants are residing in the country.

I'll file a foia to see how many immigrants have been deported over the years by each administration.

This is not the problem rather how did these alleged illegal aliens invaded Nigeria without thorough documentation?

Meanwhile, can the NIS explain how a delegation of Nigeriens and Chadians illegally entered Nigerian territory via Kano to join Buhari's presidential campaign rally last year without proper profiling. sad

Hmmm.... let me chew and try to swallow this.....millions offoreign nationals are living in the country illegally.... a security risk..... so the FG in 3 months time will begin making residency permits available for allll of them. So when they all have permits... they would no longer be a security risk. How can anyone swallow this stuff?

“For example, you operate a hotel and you have a Nigerien or Canadian staying there for 90 days, it is your duty to ask him if he has registered. I am not talking about only hotels; even if it is a factory. We have got the equipment and we are training officers.

Muhammad Babandede

Babandede mentioned businesses are supposed ask and report migrants staying over 90 days but didn't mention any punishment for breaking rule. If its not a heavy fine or jail who cares. The other issue is migrants like herdsmen to register since the FG doesn't seem interested in regulating their activities.

The government so far judging by media reports only deported 1000 people max. The lasted deportations publicized was 4 Ghanians. He should be able to break a record if he's serious about getting rid of people.

52 billion naira if its included in eborder stuff.

Do you guys feel the Nigerian immigration service and Customs should be merged?

I do since there functions seem similar from what I read on websites. They both need to monitor the border anyway to check smuggling and other crimes.

This is a good move
We can't be using resources for the citizens to cater for illegal immigrants

Our infrastructure is over burdened as it is already

Lagos State is overpopulated and 20% of that population are illegals from other countries

I won't be surprised if some Nigerians denied their nationality so that they can deported out of this country.
