The Federal Government has directed all basic and secondary schools across the country to immediately implement the teaching of history as a standalone subject from the next academic calendar.

Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education made this known on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

The Federal Government on June 18 promised the return history to school curriculum while ensuring that all primary school teachers are trained to deliver digital literacy.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has declared at the launch of Education for Justice Programme that government had kick-started implementation in 12 primary and secondary schools across the six geo-political zones and instructional classes have also commenced.

According to Mr Echono, the directive has already been given and it is automatic that all the schools should implement simultaneously.

"By the next academic calendar, history will be taught as a standalone subject.

"It is with immediate implementation. So, definitely for the next academic year everybody will fall in line because we already articulated the curriculum and the examination should be done along those lines," he said.

I cant wait till they start teaching the civil war. Awe this will be fun. The states could have added history all this while they just didnt deem it important. I commend the federal government for this.

How is teaching the civil war going to solve our problems that are jumping for it?

Who is going to write the texts?

See, no amount of history or compelling evidence can change anything except the people involved are ready and willing to owe up to the truth. Without this, even the most compelling evidence will be lost in controversy.

Look at the international political scene and you will see that politics without conscience is dark art.

Seeing this I am glad. I hope the civil war won't be removed from the curriculum. And if it is included, the whole story should be well explained. And also how the white took us into slavery. It Is very important

That’s commendable, the evils or good deed of our past leaders shouldn’t be hidden. Let’s celebrate heroes and expose villains

I hope they have not doctored topics to suit their narrative and distort the truth.

The history should go beyond the amalgamation of Nigeria and teach the students their true origin and how they got stuck in this shiit hole.

Good, we need to learn and understand our history. That way we'll breed more responsible humans in this country without hate filled hearts.
I just hope the syllabus leave no stones unturned.
