Former MD Of Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, Convicted Of Bank Fraud by warrior01: 5:05pm On Oct 08, 2010
Mrs. Cecilia Ibru, the former managing director of Oceanic Bank PLC, is to spend six months in jail and  forfeit over N150 billion Naira in assets and cash.

The former MD was convicted of bank and securities fraud and was convicted earlier today by a federal high court judge preisded over by Justice Dan Abutuin Ikoyi, Lagos.

However, the judge provided what amounts to a slap on the wrist by giving her only six months jail time. The judge said Mrs. ibru  will not get 1 -month credit for time already spent in EFCC custody during her arrest and interrogation. Her six months jail time would run concurrently as she was convicted on several counts of bank and security fraud.

Mrs. Ibru has vast assets throughout the world.

Re: Former MD Of Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, Convicted Of Bank Fraud by Kennyblues(m): 6:29pm On Oct 08, 2010
I am shocked beyond words. 98% of our population survive on less than a dollar a day for no fault of theirs. 80% of our youth are unemployed, majority of them with first and masters degrees. If Cecelia Ibru who has never held a government position can be a BILLIONAIRE just from fraudulently running a small bank, imagine what IBB,ATIKU,OBJ,ABDULSALAM,CIROMA,GUSAU,JONATHAN,ABACHA FAMILY,YAR'ADUA FAMILY,DANJUMA,ALL GOVERNORS AND MINISTERS PAST AND PRESENT,ALL LOCAL GOVT CHAIRMEN AND COUNCELLORS PAST AND PRESENT, PDP STALWARTS,MILITARY GENERALS ETC,are worth!!! Does it surprise anyone why we do not have good roads, electricity, adequate health care, security, employment opportunities, good schools, housing, water, social welfare programmes?
The most unbearable thing is that these criminals are the ones that run our daily lives. How will things ever get better except we rise up and take our destiny in our own hands and bring these criminals to justice?
Cecelia Ibru got only six months for stealing hundreds of billions from the people!!! Amazing! An armed robber and a kidnapper gets the firing squad, but a pen robber who stole hundreds of billions gets tea and coffee!! ONLY IN NIGERIA!! Bernie Madoff got life sentence for defrauding his investors and all his assets seized and sold.
The people of Nigeria must rise and fight for survival. God is not going to do it and no one else will. We must organise and fight those who have made us slaves in our own land!!!

N150bn naira approximates to $1bn. I imagine these are some of the assets that were acquired illegally (until a superior court says otherwise) when Oceanic bank came into existence not long ago.

The icon of this family has been in stupendous wealth since the 50s. His net worth must be in billions of dollars, yet he doesnt get a mention/recognition by known international media like other billionaires freq do.

This raises the question of how much money does a human being need to be satisfied (and secured).

She needs to be executed as well.

If only we followed the Chinese Model!

Corruption would be a thing of the past.

I feel with this judgement, corruption is now formally legalised in Nigeria. So what this means is that anybody that is opportuned to be in charge of any office can go on and embezzle as much as he/she can. At the end of the day, you will be begged to return half of the loot, spend six months holiday in an open prison and thereafter go home happily a billionaire. If this is what the war against corruption is, then Nigeria is doomed.

The kleptomaniac in chief. This is what happens when you give a klepto access to money, they dont have limits on what they can steal.

It's quite obvious we have different kinds of laws in Nigeria; one for the rich and another set for the poor. Just imagine what would have happened to a poor man that stole #100 on the street of Lagos. So unfair

The seizure of all these propertise and shares is more painful than some useless long jail term where does this woman want to start from. But let us call a spade a spade no human being should own this much in a country where there is so much poverty. This is classical greed in all it's ramifications
Re: Former MD Of Oceanic Bank, Cecilia Ibru, Convicted Of Bank Fraud by Kennyblues(m): 6:43pm On Oct 08, 2010
This is absolutely stupefying, To think that this woman gets away with this crime is a microcosom of how low the system has sank.

I disagree with this opinion cos she still kept some properties running into billions of naira still. Some poor folks have gone to 8 years jail for less than one million naira and we are talking of billions here. FYI, do you know you can start six universal banks with (#25 billion each) in Nigeria with the amount siezed from this convict and to add salt to injury, she's an 'elder' in the church. She deserve to rot in jail

Its a shame that this woman gets just 6months for 150billion, when most hardworking Nigerians cannot save up 1million naira for 12months.

Just 6 months? It's a shame indeed!

She is entitled to keep some houses which include her main residence in Lagos no matter d price plus one in her home town, probably one in Abuja and one abroad. As a chief executive of a bank she would be entitted to favaroble interest rates which d general public does not have accesss to, secondly she would be entitled to huge bonuses for expanding d bank over d years.

Is that what the court says? I am just asking but I think it is only 150 bn thay the court seized because they can only seize what was traced to her to have come from the money that she stole. We all know that not all her money was stolen. She has other legal ways of making money too.

I feel she should get more than just 6 month. Anyway, let us see the gravity of the crime she was convicted for.

so, whatz the lesson to be learnt here? A pat at the back for stealing what was kept in trust? If what you are saying is the truth, then we are in trouble

THIS IS JUDICIAL PRECEDENT FOR FUTURE CASE, THIS WILL ENCOURAGE MORE LOOTERS.

I CAN'T SEE A BETTER TOMORROW WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING IN NIGERIA AS AT NOW.

Guess the norm is now for all pen robbers to get 6 months. Check this out: Tafa Balogun, then Lucky Igbinedion and now Cecilia Ibru! Hmmmmmm, Nigeriaaaaaaaaaaa
