A 34-year-old Nigerian was arrested on Thursday after police raided his upmarket Boksburg townhouse and found a drug laboratory, Gauteng police said.

Drugs, equipment and chemicals worth around R1 million were seized, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

The provincial task team received a tip-off via Crime Line and responded to the relatively new townhouse complex at midday.

"Police confiscated a large quantity of chemicals in containers and drums, and some of the chemicals were even hidden in a fridge," he said.

At least one kilgram of the drug Cat was found in a plastic bag.

Police said the tip-off led to a major drug breakthrough and commended the whistle-blower. Police hoped to make more arrests.

The man was expected to appear in court on Friday.
