In order to have a democratic nation, Nigeria has to heal herself of the pathologies that have held her down for decades. This can only begin and can only be achieved with a brand new,people-drawn constitution, not an amendment of an anti-federal, military imposed 1999 constitution which is currently being operated.
A quick survey of the background and the history of the 1999 constitution reveals the following facts:
a) It was imposed by the Military by virtue of Decree no. 24
b) It was not ratified by any elected bodies
c) It side tracked serious contentious issues such as true federalism,a replica of the 1979 constitution which was operated when Nigeria was divided into 19 states, and now Nigeria has 36 states
.How can this cope with the current situation in Nigeria?
d) A mere "copy and paste " exercise
e) The people were not involved
It follows from the above that the phrase in the preamble "we the people " Is nothing but a sham!
The 1999 constitution has a faulty foundation already, embarking on an amendment of a constitution of such massively flawed origin is nothing but a futile and fruitless exercise. A practical example is a house with a faulty foundation, trying to renovate it without tackling the problem with its foundation is futile, the house will collapse like a pack of cards.
By October 1,drums will be rolled out to celebrate 59years of independence.Nigeria has survived a civil war, 6 military coups and 8military heads of state. But despite these seemingly achievements, Nigeria is still lagging behind and still groping in darkness.
Our leaders have failed woefully in mustering the leadership vision and the statesmanly discipline required to forge a nation from the diverse ethnic groups scattered across the vast geographical location. They have stubbornly and selfishly stuck to the imposed military constitution as it suits their selfish interests.
Some have argued that a constitution amendment Is better owing to the fact that the 3 organs of government are conservative and are not ready for a constitution replacement. But the question is, "For how long will Nigeria continue like this?"
The time is now! it's high time we took the bull by its horns, it's high time we all made the demand for a new constitution more intense and passionate.

The single pathology that has held Nigeria down for decades is the ignorance of it's people. It is the single reason that we have the constitution that we have, one designed by we the people within our very own limitations.

The Panacea To Nigeria's Stunted Growth is an increase in knowledge and it's use. With knowledge and an understanding of its use even our constitution would be much better if need be, or we'd adhere to it better.

You need people who can draw one, first.
