People collapse and die in advanced countries hospitals even with defibrillators present. A defibrillators might not necessarily have saved him.

But the lack of it is very good and should be commended.

Many teaching hospitals in Nigeria might have an AED...but it is usually placed in the ICU or the Theater where it is needed

I don't wanna give you personal stories of cobweb filled, non functional AEDs

It's high time Nigeria medical association allowed administrators to run our hospitals.

Most times when government provides facilities, Drs will loot them into their private hospitals.

So many avoidable deaths due to poor management.

Rule no 1 of CPR....you do it for as long as possible till the patient's heart starts beating again (and if you are tired, someone takes over from you)

And speaking as a medic...I have assisted in some CPR's,(including one which lasted for about over an hour...and left me with back ache for a week...ouch). Some pateints die, some survive.

Fabrice Muamba, the ex-footballer, surviuved a heart attack partly because of continous, sustained CPR of over 2 hours.

Can you hit someone's heart area hard enough with your fist to resuscitate them? Is that also CPR?

Nigerians deserve every ounce of poverty and suffering they are currently experiencing.

You had the chance to vote any other serious political party outside PDP or APC but chose to stick to the status quo.

When you keep voting in the same people who rather than develop the county continue to steal from your over and over again...then you most certainly don’t have my sympathy.

And una just dey start the “Next Level” regime cheesy grin. Nigerians happy suffering!

Well, this is the usual process..(if it is just your hands you have).

Lol..

That is not the real reason.
How many doctors in Nigeria are trained to use Defibrillator?
Having AED is one thing knowing how to use it is another.

If he actually had a shock in presence of other doctors, good CPR would have save him before getting to level of needing AED.
The moment u call for AED and found out there is none, the colleagues should have put him in Ambulance to another private facility where there is AED.
U guys just wasted time and life of this doctor

I felt like saying something vile, but it's all good.

You however need to know that an idiot can use an AED-- it is AUTOMATED!

Note that Chest compressions can only do so much for a shockable rhythm. Defribillation is the most important index, and the farther away from the cardiac arrest, the less the chance of survival.

There is more to this story, was at a teaching hospital yesterday, except for the HoD there was no other doctor in the department, trust the matron to keep reading it like a news item. 3 of the doctors finally came in by 11am ~ no apologies they are Lords of the Manor. A referral from Antenatal clinc was turned back at 12 that the number has been exhausted and she should return on Monday. Nigeria is the way it is because of the Nigerians residing therein, a contraption of chaos and corruption bound by religion.

That's is not an excuse Mister. That kind of excuse is what makes the government look the other way and impliedly believe it's not their fault.

defibrillator is not difficult to use even EMT in USA know how to use it. Defibrillators shoud be available in public places like hotels, mall, airport. patients in cardiac arrest should be defibrillated within 5 to 10 minutes and them transfer to hospital for proper management.
it is careless that is killing us in this country. how much is a defibrillator? we do not value human life.

And how are you sure CPR was NOT done on him?

And indeed since you know the REAL reason for his death..

How do you know that NON of the Doctors there were incapable of using a Defibrillator?

You were not there to know what and what they did or where capable of doing to save his life, stop with the condescending tone.. shocked

Well, we medics are trained in how to use a defibrillator...and if one does not know, one attends a CME program that offers such training.(some cost some money)

Youtube and the internet help refresh memories

The problem is that defibrillators cost money....and most hospitals in Nigeria cannot afford them. When the National health budget is below N900billion for over 50 odd teaching hospitals, and hundreds of primary and secondary care level hospitals....

Cost money? How much are we talking about here? I just checked on Amazon and even in China, what I saw isn't even up to $2000. Or are there more sophisticated ones that cost billions?

Using AED is basic. I guess you are a medical personnel who thinks some of these things must be learnt in a teaching hospital.....maybe during your housemanship.
You will be shocked to know that many things you guys charge use can be delivered by any person who serves the public.

This is a big lie.
pls mention the department here. Most likely, u are talking about O&G department. Department of O&G has more than 20 residents (Senior & Junior regs), & by that time(11am), a working hour u will see nothing less than 15 doctors at various units of the department
