A Nigerian believed to be in his forties has died in a detention centre in the United Kingdom.

The immigration detainee, who is yet to be named, was found dead on Thursday evening in his cell in Colnbrook Immigration Removal Centre.

The UK’s Home Office is investigating the incident, The Independent reports.

Another detainee, Tapiwa Furumdi, 24, who has been in the facility for a year, was said to have discovered the victim lying still in his cell.

“Someone had gone into the room and found a body and started making noise. Apparently he was already dead. I heard something like: ‘This bloody immigration, look what they’re doing to us,’” he said.

“When I looked in the room, his tongue looked all bloated out of his mouth. I’m still shaken up by it.”

A Home Office spokesperson said the UK government condoles with the victim’s family and friends.

Human rights campaigners have long called for a 28-day limit for detention in removal centres, saying the system is severely damaging for the wellbeing of detainees.

There are people in detention facilities abroad who are living a higher standard of life than many Nigerians here.

Rich countries should prepare for an increase in immigration from the Third world and for immigrant numbers (descendants included) hitting 30% or more of their population in the coming 5 decades.

The good news is that poor countries are increasingly becoming richer with many African countries now having impressive rates of growth which could lift them into Upper Middle Income status within a quarter of century. Ghana and Ivory Coast in West Africa are just 2 in this part of the continent. Many hitherto fortune seekers will prefer to stay put than travel. Also, trade with these countries will help lift their economies as well. Japanese Brazilians were better treated in Brazil when otherwise poor Japan became a very wealthy country, the second largest economy in the world. No condition is ever permanent.

This is extremely sad. The lives of detainees need to be treated with more respect. Unfortunately this is the downside of a terrible international reputation. A good name is far better than Silver and Gold.

People like you are part of our major problem!
You are making comparison . If a white man is detain what will that amount to for you .
Your case is like the case of a dirty man that is asking people to take their shower before entering his home . I believe we should address the reason for keeping them for too long without addressing their case !!!
What I think is that Nigeria should make a strong case fir the dead man and seek fir better treatment of all immigrants. Regardless of the situation . Let them know that illegal immigrants are ambassadors responsibility. They should just present such a person to the embassy in the country .
That is when we know that our country cares for its citizens
