Strange guests cause stir in parts of Lagos State

Some parts of ( like Ikeja, Maryland, etc) Lagos State were yesterday invaded by a swarm of moths that refused to return to their colony all day.

They perched on walls and trees all over the place, leaving people to wonder what was going on.

Workers at the Alausa Secretariat where the highest concentration of the nocturnal insects was noticed said they had never seen such a strange sight before.

Some said it was an ominous sign that the end-time would soon come.

Yet others said the insects were on a suicide mission, as they would continue to fly until they die.

But Mr Seun Oluseitan, a veteran science writer said last night: "The massive swarm of moths at the Alausa Secretariat may be a first environmental reaction to the destruction by burning of expired or substandard antibiotics at the Alausa landfill about five weeks ago by a company yet to be identified.

"The chemical fume released by the burning was just in time for copulating moths to experience unusual fecundity which may have triggered the unusual bloom in their population."
