Before you make an assertion, you give us a basis for coming to that conclusion.

Apart from HR, Finance and Computer science graduates, which other field has more graduate employed than the Science/engineering?

Problem with Nigeria is that we have few manufacturing companies in Nigeria.

Must they wait for the jobs, they can create one.

There are following reasons for the unemployment of engineers:

1. Lack of Interest

2. Lack of Guidance

3.Lack of Motivation

Lack of Interest:

You can imagine people studying in engineering as a flock of sheeps. They choose to become an engineer because some of their friends and relatives told them that it is cool. 90% of the current engineering students don't have any interest in whatever they are studying. They want to do it because they think that engineering will give them a job. Your passion gives you a job, not what you mug up during the academic period. Only 8 to 10% students learn the stuff with interest and passion.

Lack of Guidance:

I am going to tell you a fact that no one openly tells in the market: Most of the faculty don't know what they are teaching. Therefore, you cannot expect their student to be expert in basic concepts like Databases, etc. 60 to 70% of students don't know what are the open source projects. Most of the students don't know what GitHub website is and why people use "git". Why? Because no one tells them about it.

Lack of Motivation:

In the engineering education system of India, there is a system of torturing students by using donkey work as a medium. There is no creativity, no application of concepts learned in college. Teachers and faculties only want to give marks and not the proper education. A student who was doing a lot of donkey work sincerely because their college tells him/her to do and suddenly after coming in the final year, he/she realizes that he/she never tried to focus on practical skills and communication skills! Now, who is responsible for that? Education system or student himself?

An average student is under tremendous pressure because he /she pays tuition fees of college in naira per annum. So,he/she is not willing to have a year down or backlogs.

The quality of education and training provided by African countries has worsened since 2014, leaving many of the continent’s growing population of young people ill-prepared to enter the job market, an influential report said on Tuesday.

The Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG), the most comprehensive survey of its kind on the continent, found that on average enrolment and access to education was particularly low in the tertiary sector.

“This has resulted in the burgeoning youth population being faced with increasing struggles when entering the job market,” researchers at the Mo Ibrahim Foundation wrote in an interim update ahead of the full biennial report due to be published next year.

Simple!!! They become unemployed because their education is not problem driven and they do not practice what they studied towards addressing problems! A student who takes up an admission offer to study medicine and surgery with the hope to find a cure to cancer will likely hone in all his or her efforts, choose specific electives and pursue researches with the hope to inch closer and closer towards finding a cure to cancer. In addition, such a person will seek job opportunities that allows him or her pursue further researches towards addressing the problem of cancer. But when the person, like most of us, gets admission with no real ambition in mind, with no basic problem in mind and no long term ambition in mind such a person is likely to remain unemployed after graduation.

Education has to be problem driven for it to be relevant and functional!

cry

Because we have a consumption based economy and not a manufacturing based economy

Trade and commerce related profession seems more sorted after than Engineering and Science, because an average Nigerian prefers to import even water from china, since crude oil forex is available and our borders are wide open

Most companies prefer unskilled labour to skilled labour that is the prefer to pick up an O' level holder who will be grateful for the job with the peanut he/she is being paid to a graduate who knows his/her onions also some graduates attitude to work is nothing to write home about.

With practically no knowledge of machine or engineering experience? My technical department most new intake no next to nothing, the Workshop Manager is an old technician that went to technical school in the 90's and laments the type of graduates from engineering dept in our varsity.
