MEXICO CITY — Heavy gunfire consumed the streets of Culiacan on Thursday afternoon, as Mexican security forces struggled to fend off members of the Sinaloa cartel, once led by notorious drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Members of the cartel deployed across the city with military-grade weapons, a remarkable, live-streamed glimpse into their ability to overwhelm the state.

Mexican officials briefly detained Ovidio Guzman, one of El Chapo’s sons who has emerged as a leading figure in the cartel after his father was arrested in 2016. But as the members of the cartel took to the streets, apparently freeing dozens of prisoners and turning the city into an urban war zone, Mexican authorities decided to release Ovidio Guzman.

Security Minister Alfonso Durazo told Reuters that Guzman was released to protect lives.

In mexico drug cartels seems to be more powerful than the local police, it would take an army to bring than a powerful drug lord.

Do not be deceived.. Mexican government hugely benefits from Drugs. Cocaine made their economy stronger in the 90's and still do.

my brother I have read about Pablo Escobar again and again and again, I have read about El Chapo as well and I can tell you that El chapo is more successful in crime than the Columbian, and these are my reasons, he Escaped from jail twice and was still roaming free in mexico until he was arrested and extradited to the US, secondly El Chapo forged and became the overall druglord of an empire which continued to flourish and blossom after he was arrested, El Chapo even transcend his legacies to his children who are now his successor (that is a dynasty) even if El chapo dies the sinaloa cartel would still remain strong and that was what Escobar was unable to achieve, Escobar's empire collapsed after his death.

This is a competition between drug cartel states
and villagers. Why ? because Canada and several states in the USA legalized drug and make millions of dollars if not billions every year.
.Some companies are buying land in Central and South America to grow marijuana.
