Greed, yes but these frequent collapses is not about substandard materials, and it is really sad that the LASG has been very dumb to see the underlying cause. The underlying cause of building collapse in Lagos is the blocks industry! Not the steel or metal. Nobody is regulating and monitoring who makes blocks in Lagos. Blocks that are later sold and then you have buildings collapsing everywhere, you have new buildings with block cracks under 2 months because those making blocks are making rubbish and yet the LASG government is blind to see this as a serious problem.

Your emphasis on blocks as major cause of collapse is indeed interesting, laughable, suspicious but overall.. not true. Be informed that blocks dont usually serve as structural members especially in multi storey buildings. They, most times serve as partition members. Which explains why there are different sizes of blocks. It also explains why we have buildings whose fabric are made of glass and other materials. Blocks pay very minute role in structural stability.
Issues such as substandard materials especially reinforcement rods, poor concrete mix ratios, poor supervision, wrong structural calculations, overloading are culprits in building collapses.
It is therefore important to state that our monitoring agencies need to do more in terms of ensuring quality rather than their usual attitude of collecting bribes and turning blind eyes to poor construction processes.

I guess bubu's body odour ooses out the stench of darkness and death

Jesus was not crucified, He escaped via the help of Pontus Pilate who Jesus healed his son of epilepsy
At night Jesus escaped prison via the help of a roman guard sent by Pontus pilate .
Pontus adviced Jesus to change his name and go to far country where he lived a secret life with Mary Magdalene and had 5 kids with her.

The Roman Empire during Constantine's reign called all bishops to council Nicaea to re write the story of Jesus to make it look more interesting.
So they added the story of crucifixion, ressurection to make it look epic and removed any trace of the later low key life of Jesus and his relationship with Mary Magdalene and their 5 kids..
Also women were among the disciples of Jesus
The Bishops removed all the names of female disciples and made it look like it was just 12 men
Mary and Joseph had normal sex and Jesus was born. Again This Bishops were given almighty privilege to re write history by Roman empire. So the immaculate conception was added to make it look grander. Jesus was a healer well known for travelling to Egypt,India to further his knowledge of healing from the gurus before he came back to Jerusalem an advanced healer but his tricks soon got him into public eye and the Pharisees..

Lol. How can BLOCKS be responsible for the collapse of a building like this? Reinforced concrete columns bear the weight of the building and not block walls. If the structural frame of the building is done well, you can do the walls with glass or even carton, it will stand.

Heaven knows that I will bring those local block molders to mold the whole blocks that will be used to build my house manually. I must be personally around to make sure that the aggregates for the concrete works is correctly counted and added. An aggregate of 10 bags of cement and 25 head pans of gravel can be reduced to 6 bags of cement and 15headpans of gravel. I don't trust Nigerian Engineers and foremen. They are mostly shady.

All those vibrated block molding machines are often times substandard. A country that people adulterate palm oil with dangerous chemicals for fraudulent gains, what will they not do with cement, iron rods and blocks? A country where drugs are produced in people's homes. A nation where people manufacture Stout and other beers in their living room.

A norm less society where life is short, brutish and nasty.

Building with substandard materials. All because of greed.
From the look of the the building it was poorly designed, the dead weight of the building more than the compressive force of the first floor slab

The masses are in seriouse need of accommodation as prices of building materials keeps increasing daily.

I am of the opinion that there should be a total overhaul in the building industry,Government at all levels should come up with stringent measures to make sure that building structures are erected according to the building plan and monitoring team should always visit the site in real time. Also,on any building project the Architect and other service engineers names should be boldly placed on site in case anything goes wrong, they will be called for questioning.

The frequent building collapses in Lagos is because the building blocks industry is unregulated. Every Tom Dick and Harry is making blocks however they want, nobody is regulating or monitoring what they mix and in what proportion they mix to mould blocks, which are being sold to builders. Some of these block makers cut costs or use wrong cement or contaminated sand (too many impurities that reduce quality of adhesion) or mould substandard blocks and that's why you're having building collapses all over. The LASG should as a matter of urgency implement regulations and monitoring to all block moulders, so as to have uniformity of quality. Many building blocks being sold today are substandard. Under 2 months, you can already see cracks in the surfaces of buildings. That's why building collapses are now frequent.
it's not even block... Block isn't the problem.... If d building was properly reinforced with the right rods... Whether d block na sand sef it won't fall... They used substandard rods... That's why it collapsed as if. No rod whatsoever was introduced into d concrete

With the way that Buhari & APC are looking for money to steal by taxing people anyhow, forget about any price reduction happening anytime soon.

Blocks aren’t the reason for building collapse in Lagos. Blocks are mere partition walls that bear very little loads. The main load bearing members are the footing (foundation), columns, beams and slabs. From the picture of the collapse, I wouldn’t blame the foundation, cos it collapsed as a result of wrong beam arrangement/reinforcement. One side collapsed and the other sides are still standing. I advice the use of qualified structural engineers in such projects. It’s a pity, these stingy clients overlook us and rather prefer to use unqualified people. They will continue losing on the long run. I just pity the artisans that lost their lives. May their souls RIP

I totally disagree with the theory that this building collapsed as result of substandard materials. Builders and owners of buildings in Ikoyi cannot stoop so low, they are big boys. That building may have collapsed due to structural defect as result of impossible design. Part of the building decking may have been designed without pillar. I am judging from the angle from which I am seeing the picture.

From look of things this building looks more like a government edifice these didn't happen as a result of inferior materials rather the engnr, moreover the engnr handling the work is to be blame see cantilever shutout with no proper reinforcement since your cantilever will stretch close to 2m you should have reinforce it through the foundation out of the blue voom cantilever even if u like use 20mm rod it will just be a matter of time......

NB. The building doesn't look cheap so it not a material fault for me rather construction.

They should arrest the man asap.
