Hi, please permit me to elaborate on what the young guy told you cos it seems you find it hard to figure out. Of course I don't expect you to cos it's beyond what you can imagine. However, please note it's not in any way an excuse for scam.

Government Corruption: You said he mentioned government corruption? How would you imagine that that public office holders will have undergrounds and suck aways filled with hard cash, or huge overhead water tanks but instead of water stacked with cash. Have you heard of Gen. Sanni Abacus? He ruled from 1993–1997/8 can't remember precisely but till date is loot is still being recovered from foreign nations in millions of dollars. You know the most painful thing if those loots by Past Head of states and current politicians/public office holders are invested back into Nigeria's economy it would have been better but off to foreign accounts they go. Each day you hear on the news millions and billions of oil money missing like a pin lost in the boundless ocean. we are used to it in Nigeria.

You mentioned electricity: How about having power supply for just 2-3hrs within 24hrs? I'm sure you think that can only happen if there's a fault in US but we go days sometimes weeks without it. Uninterrupted 12hrs supply from the national grids is great luxury. Some Nigerians will curse me for that statement cos just 6hrs of that must be heaven in 90%(crude statistics). We provide our electricity through generators. Don't even think about running a business if you have not first sorted out how to get a generator. This one is hilarious, it doesn't matter that you only had electricity for just 72hrs combined in a month. Your outrageous electricity bill is gonna be served.

Unemployment: The best I can explain that to you is this. How about you knowing that 65818 graduates applied for 2200 vacancy in the last Lagos state govt teaching job offer. Permit me to also inform you that the application portal was only open for 6days between Aug 31, midnight - Sept 6 midnight. Some people couldn't even apply at all before the closing date cos the portal couldn't handle the huge traffic. What about the over 300k applicant for 4k Federal Road Safety Corps job. You can google unemployment rate in Nigeria but I wouldn't take that figure seriously cos much of what that figure would have classified as employed youth are actually grossly underemployed youth. For instance my younger brother is also a graduate who works in a Private Secondary School where he earns 20k Naira monthly. That's $55.55 at the average parallel market(thats what's available to the average Nigerian) rate of #360/$. Mind you did I tell you our minimum wage is around 19k Naira monthly, around $52.77 monthly but a 50kg bag of rice costs averagely between 13-15k Naira.

Pipe borne water: I can't remember the last time I saw government one running and yes I'm living, have lived and visited many urban areas and state Capitals. You get your own pipe borne water by sinking Your Own borehole then a plumber helps you run it into your house QED. For this reason satchet or bottle water is a booming business.

Health: Our hospitals are mortuaries in disguise cos they lack many basic facilities not to talk of advanced ones. That's why our politicians fly out of the country to Europe,America or some Middle Eastern country at the slightest feel of headache. Mind you health services is not only not free but expensive. Many die daily for the mere fact that they can pay their bills even in government hospitals. It's always pay before service.

Roads: just one example and I will be done. The Lagos-Ibadan expressway is the most busy and the most economic important road in Nigeria because Lagos Ports are the main ports for import and export into Nigeria. Meaning all major import and export goods and materials ply that road. How will you feel if I tell you that it's the surfacing since its been built since the 70s that is still there. But I must admit that reconstruction is being done as I type on the road though. If the most important major and economic road in a country is in such bad shape you can imagine how other roads will be. I was travelling on a bus on that road early this year when the driver hit one of the numerous portholes that took out the front driver-side tyre, thanks to God I'm alive to be typing this today. I once told myself travelling on many Nigerian roads is so risky that it qualifies for an adventure on its own.

Trade: The youth talked about learning a trade but forgot to tell you how the odds of you failing in an entrepreneurship path is so great that many prefer working for someone for the smallest stipend that they are at least sure of. I've been in business a few times and have failed. For the smallest business structure you errect, from the number of agencies working on behalf of government that will bombard you with uncountable levies to lack of credit facilities to dwindling sales and bad debt to huge cost of production especially if your business majorly rely on electricity to dwindling sales cos the economy is generally bad. This might only be peculiar to SMEs and start-ups though. You can also google number of business shutting down yearly.

Elected Leaders: Lastly you talked about how we elect our leaders. I will be giving you a first hand experience of how although not in full details. In 2015 I took part in the elections as an assistant polling officer, I just completed my National Youth Service then. In the ward where I worked, there was no polling unit from that ward that the votes where counted. Few minutes to the time we should start counting the votes castes in the ballot boxes, a well orchestrated disruption was started which was used as a cover so that we could leave the ward without counting the votes in the presence of the voters. We were escorted to the local government council where all votes from the Local government will be compiled by fully armed riot policemen. On getting to the Local council we asked our Supervisory polling officer if we should start counting the votes. We were told not to but just dump the ballot boxes to one side, afterwards we were given the election result sheet with the figures to input favouring one political party which obviously would have lost that ward as the people from that ward choose the other party. That's it, the people's choice from that ward does not matter and the same was done with every ward under that local government council. You are wondering why didn't we refuse to yield when we are made to input wrong figures and sign it off . First we polling/assisant polling officers are mainly serving youth Corps members/just discharged youth Corps members meaning we are literally Federal government property so we have little options, secondly we never knew about the plans until when each instruction comes and lastly the almighty Nigerian Army soldiers are on ground in the council to make sure there's no defaulter and everything goes well without resistance. After elections all serving Corps members have instructions not to grant any press interview nor witness in any election tribunal. So yes I'm one of the educated youth who wouldn't wanna vote cos first hand experience made me know it doesn't always count.

I believe by now you understand better what the young youth told you. Pardon my bad writing and errors, I didn't bother reading it twice.

I think 'The masses' should have been included.
With due respect, majority of the masses have little or no sense. Cuz I don't see how someone who is sane re-elect a Buhari that spent four years with nothing to show. Or how could someone who is sane be shouting Atikulate upandan?

cheesy cheesy grin
It is also a good point you elucidated on but to maintain the originality of the article in question which was gotten from the link above, we should leave it as it is.
