Good afternoon, everyone! Being part of a large Western-based forum that also specializes in Japanese anime, I have come here as part of a larger group of our users (we call ourselves anons since there are no accounts and we usually have no names there) to get an understanding of Nairaland and our counterparts in a more African-centered context. Ask me what you like, but I also have a few questions to start out:

1) I discovered Fela Kuti from our music board, and I started to really enjoy listening and dancing to old afrobeat and highlife music. Aside from Fela, who are some good artists to research from this era? Has gqom found success in Nigeria the same ways it has in South Africa?

2) I know you guys make a lot of movies, but I’ve also been somewhat acquainted with Cairo’s movie industry. Do the Egyptians compete with you in making movies for African consumers?

3) What are your impressions of the United States? From what I’ve seen and from the Nigerians I’ve met, we know you as hard workers who try to fit in with our society over here when you come. In fact, you are among the most successful immigrant groups in our country statistically, how might you explain this?

Thanks in advance for answering my questions, and as I said, feel free to ask your own! Here’s some proof I’m American, as one of you requested:

Nairalanders hardly respond to comments of this sort. R/Nigeria is a better bet since the users there are more enlightened.

I have nothing doing so will engage your questions:

1. Burna Boy, Villy & The Extreme Volumes, Wizkid, Seun Kuti and Femi Kuti are your best bet. The latter two being the man’s children so sound exactly like him. I still don’t see the fascination with a man who died many years ago when hundreds of acts, mostly internationally accepted, dominate our airwaves.

I have no clue who gqom are. If they are a band then they are not of Nigerian taste. They may have a Nigeria following but not big enough to make a blimp on our mainstream radar.

2. No film industry in Africa can compete with ours. If anything our movies opened the stage for other African nations to craft their own stories. Many colonized countries never knew black Africans could make movies until they viewed Nigerian films for the first time. Our industry competes more with Bollywood and Hollywood.

3. We only know of your country what CNN shows us and what some of our cousins who emigrate there tell us via phone and video calls. From what we hear if an individual puts in work they make gains in the form of salaries and wages. That is more than enough reason to move overseas than stay home where our effort only gets mismanaged and taken for granted.

We are hardworking because our people believe success does not come easy so we put in 100% effort into whatever we do, whether legal or otherwise.

I do not have any questions to ask. I’m satisfied as it is.

Great response my friend, thanks for the answers.

1) I’ll take a look into those

2) I’ll take a look into the movies as well, do they make films in international English often, or are they mostly pidgin?

3) as always, don’t take the mainstream media as a comprehensive view of our country, the news in our country is dominated by rich liberals from our east coast. The work hard/gain much is a reality for us, though there are ongoing debates about the effects of income inequality and the shrinking status of our middle class. From what I’ve seen, the wholesaling of lower price goods in our country is dominated by Indians, Pakistanis, Arabs, and Africans. Many individual enterprises are run by African immigrants too, like food trucks, car washes, and parking lots, something native citizens don’t participate in as often.

Our movies are done in English. The British colonized us after all. A quick example of some are Lionheart and Half Of A Yellow Sun. You can search them on Netflix or P2P networks.

If native citizens don’t partake in a business then the opportunity is left open to whoever’s ready. The “they took errr jobs” crowd are too stupid to research the fact. A lot of Nigerians subsist on washing dead bodies and still make enough money to send back home but no, “they took errr jobs!”. Lol.

Looks like someone here knows about South Park, haha. Our “took errr jobs” happens with Latin American immigrants (many illegal) and with Indians and Asians in our tech sectors. I personally agree with them in that we should decrease our temporary work visas for foreign tech workers, so that native workers get more opportunities over dysfunctional Indian tech degree mills and so we decrease foreign espionage in our tech, especially on the part of the Chinese.
