Founded by Benin yet the most prominent outside culture seen in onitsha is the Nri culture, centuries older than Benin.

You have to remember that, verified by British and Portuguese migrants together Nigeria, that Nri people were so influential that they were called to oversee the crowning of kings over many kingdoms in southern Nigeria.

They immigrated and settled in many places as well. The most likely story is that descendants of Nri priests/migrants in Benin after an argument with the Benin royal court returned back to Igboland and reacculturated to Igbo customs. Much like many Egyptians left Greco-Roman occupied Egypt to Nubia.

Hence the reason that Onitsha culture and language is completely Igbo without traces of Benin influence.
