This particular and popular idiom is oftenly used wrongly. In fact, it has been given a new meaning entirely.

Firstly, let me define what an idiom means. Of course there are other definitions from different dictionaries. But all point towards saying same thing.

An idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible from the those of the individual words. The plenty oyinbo I just wrote now as a definition is that the meaning of an IDIOM is not found in the words in used in expressing them.

Furthermore, it brings me to this popular IDIOM "YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT" confused as YOU CAN'T EAT YOUR CAKE AND HAVE IT. Yet people take the literal meaning of the latter which is oftenly used yet wrong. The former simply means, you can't have it in both ways!

So when next you hear someone use the latter, immediately, flag them red and correct them.
