FUTAB 83 set holds maiden Reunion, AGM

The 1983 set of the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTA), Ogun State, now Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) held their maiden Annual Reunion/AGM in Abeokuta on Saturday.

The alumni were the first set of students to be admitted into the school in 1983 when the school was established.

The association at the event, elected their executive members to pilot the affairs of the association.

Mr. Olaniyi Okedairo was unanimously elected as the new President of the association.

Speaking on behalf of the association, Okedairo stressed the need for government to partner with alumni associations for the overall development of schools.

Okedairo insisted that the government must recognise the important role alumni associations play in the development of the education sector in the country.

The new President who noted that many schools would have stop existing if not for the complementary efforts of alumni associations, added that schools must work together with alumni associations to bring stability to schools.

His words, "The government have paid lip service to the provision of qualitative and quantitative education to the people. The standard has fallen, and it looks as if it is only private schools that are performing well."

"We all know that the government has been doing very little to assist schools. It is the alumni bodies that muster whatever resources they have with their connection, to see which area they can help schools."

"The government is not really doing anything, to say that they are not doing enough is an understatement."

Okedairo pledged the association's unflinching support to the development of FUNAAB saying "We are going to help in the development of the school in various areas, such as building projects, helping indigent students, award of scholarships to students among others."

"Our plan for the school is to first assess what is on ground, we are going to have a relationship with the school. By the grace of God we have so many people in different areas in this country and they are willing to help raise the standard of the school.

"Before we go into any project, we will assess it to see what benefits it brings to the students and even to the association", Okedairo said.
