Okra farming also called okro farming is one of the most profitable farming ventures you can do in Nigeria. Most if not all Nigerians eat okra, this type of vegetable is used in the preparation of soups. It is not too difficult to be successful in okra farming. You just need to cultivate your okra crop scientifically. Farming is science and you should take it as a very serious business. When you plant your okro crop like the average Nigerian farmer, you are likely to make little or no money from it. How to do okro farming successfully Get a fertile farmland Before you get a farmland for your okra farm, you need to carry out a soil test. The soil test will show the fertility of the soil. It will also show the pH, nutrients and microbial count of your soil. Ensure that your farmland is fertile. If you cannot get a fertile farmland, you can add manure, microbial inoculants and fertilizers to the soil to make it fertile. Farmland preparation To make good money from okro farming, you need to prepare your farmland. Farmland preparation involves felling of trees, de-stumping, ploughing, harrowing and ridging etc. Your soil should be loose with no hard pans. Having ridges can be very beneficial to your okra crop. Mechanised farmland preparation is faster and much more efficient than the use of manual labour especially if your farmland is big. Install drip irrigation I strongly advise you use drip irrigation for your okra farm. With drip irrigation, you can farm all year round. This is called brain fed farming. Rain fed farming allows you to farm only when it is raining. During the rainy season, prices of okra are always very low and you can experience glut. This can lead to loss if you are not careful. With drip irrigation, you can apply fertilizers and other nutrients to your plants through the emitters of the drip tapes. This process is called fertigation, it can increase the yield of your crops by 40-200% if done in the right way. With drip irrigation, you can also significantly increase your okra plant density without any adverse effect. You can buy your drip irrigation from Get good okro seeds A lot of okra seeds sold in Nigeria are expired and not fit for farming. I advise you get your seeds from accredited seeds dealers. Hybrid seeds generally perform better than open pollinated seeds. However, you should plant the variety of okra eaten by the people around your farm. I know a number of farmers who planted varieties of okra Nigerians do not eat. Of course, they recorded losses. You can soak your okro seeds in a solution of potassium humate to increase the germination rate. You can also use biofertilisers and microbial inoculants to improve the germinate rate. Buy other farm inputs Your okra farm will need inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides etc. You can use 100% organic inputs or inorganic inputs. You can also use both organic and inorganic farm inputs. Ensure you buy your inputs from good farm inputs sellers 1 Like 1 Share |

Recruit members of staff Ensure you mechanise your farm’s processes as much as possible. You need to employ labourers and a farm manager. Most farm labourers in Nigeria are from the Republic of Benin and the Republic of Benin. You can also employ people who live near your farm. Never make the mistake of employing those with big qualifications without experience as your farm manager. I know farm managers who studied non—agric courses and they are performing far better than those with advanced degrees in agronomy. Experience is very important in farming. Weeding Weeds can reduce your yield by as much as 98%. Weeds also harbour pests and diseases. You should ensure that your farm is weed free. There are small mechanized weeders you can use to make weeding very easy for you. Fertilisation If your okra farming is based on organic farming principles, you can use bio-fertilisers, manure, microbial inoculants and humates. For inorganic farmers, you can use fertilizers like NPK, urea, DAP, calcium nitrate and potassium nitrate etc. Buy your fertilizers from accredited dealers. Application of pesticides This also depends on whether you are an organic okra farmer or an inorganic okra farmer. There are good organic pesticides and also good inorganic pesticides. You just need to decide on the products you want. Most organic pesticides are more effective for prevention. You must apply your pesticides according to the instructions. Also obey the pre harvest interval. Harvesting Harvesting your okra every 2-3 days will help to increase the yield and the well being of the plant. Delaying of harvest can lead to a significant dip in yield. Okra farming can make you smile to the bank if done in the right way. |

I love your post. Sound, precise and concise but you missed the biggest part, which I was earnestly looking forward to. How do I identity my market? Okro as a fresh vegetable has short life span. If I don't have a market, what are the post-harvest processes I can use to still make sales and eventually smile to bank? I'll really love to get answers to these questions. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Parablesonmarble: to me i dont really think that will be a big deal, the thing is there are general markets just almost everywhere. You can just walk up to sellers there and ask them if you can be supplying them fresh okro straight from the farm, or better still pay their market union fees and take your produce direct to the market and sell buyers will ask you where your farm is so they can be coming there direct to buy rather than you bringing it down to the market. The thing is for you to just move around and ask for where major sellers of okro are and supply them hmm the last time i went for a market survey on a basket filled with okro the woman told me she bought it for 4,500 and that was during october last year |

my2chains: I asked cos when I was at Leventis Foundation/Osun State Agric School in 2016, we planted both 42-day dwarf and lady finger species. It was a wonderful experience learning to grow and tend. However, sales became an issue. In southwest, half of the population do not eat okro for different reasons, part of the remaining half preferred jute mallow (ewedu) to okro. Since demand was poor, price was low. I then asked about post- harvest processes and I realized that very few Yoruba take processed okro (orunla). I expanded my research and realized that South- east and South-south people eat more okro and both fresh and processed okro are valued especially during dry season when you only grow by fadama. The problem to me now is going as far as east or south-south to get market may be counterproductive in the long run. Well, I guess you'll never know until you try. 5 Likes |

Just to note a few things, i currently have dwarf okro seeds in abundance here with me this minutes. Dwarf okro seeds that can even cover more than an acrea of land. Life is all about balance. Some will be wishing how and where they can even get it sent to them to plant. But mine is here even waisting away. I have used some for planting but the rest will be stored for next season planting. I currently have just a plot of okro for a start here in lagos and the market is very close enough, when i succeed in this will expand to acrea of lands partners and investors are always welcomed. Cheers! |

Re: Okro Farming – A Surefire Way To Make N1 Million Monthly by my2chains(m): 9:49am On May 03, 2020 |
Victornezzar: ahhh 1 million in just one plot of land, when you are not mr okoroemeka the invincible wizard in farming, if you can imagine millions then it can happen in acrea of farmlands, one plot can give you a million but it will surely take time, your wealth as a farmer can only increase if you keep acquiring for more farmlands, so it means the more farms you have then the more wealth you will create for yourself and your generation |

Victornezzar: this one you are serious and determined to know how much per average you can make from just okro farming, from an acrea to a plot you just want to know how much that you will make, hmm you can make a million or 2 from an acrea of dwarf okro, but please bro there is enough space where i farm, abeg no forget me o! with the sights of hearing a million it makes me have this happy strange orgasm, see as i am shinning my teeths here, me too wants to be earning this millions! The thing is we can pay for the clearing and collect for ourselves just an acrea there, and plant okro with ugu leaf, then we are sure of earning millions monthly from an acrea farm here in lagos i really like people like you, they dream in millions! Hmm I can make that a reality for you bro only if we can work on trust. To be a strong farmer you must be ready to travel inside thick thick bushes like mr okoroemeka my mentor bro please come join me drink hot tea this morning! Victornezzar: you know i like anything related to money LOL! Even if you stay in kenya or mozambique a visit to my new farm site is always welcomed. It pains me the picture quality is not accepted by nairaland. If not i should have upploaded abundance of photos of the farm here. If you want to startup with cucumber first, then we will need to make plans to bundle with strong ropes mr okoroemeka by force to lagos here. He must come here to show us the way to this his mysterious cucumber growning patterns, if he sturbonly does not want to come, then i think ego (money) will draw him here. When i credit him with 10 million naira then he will know this no be child's play. To make money you really need to spend money, thats the secret poor people dont understand! Thats why nothing works for them. Please what if goverment bans everything again after this monday ease of the lockdown? What if they say the number of affected people is still increasing? And they will announce another lockdown again, its only farmers, foodstuff businesses, medicines, fuel stations will only stay open all others will shut down, so invest wisely cheers! |

Victornezzar: ok no props, praises be to the lord for his mercies, i just keep wondering how it feels to own a farmland inside the barracks where soldiers stay. And you are planting cucumber, i am very much sure you will only get 40% of all your farm produce, because by the time those nuttle heads soldiers enter your farm to test if your cucumber is good enough, i tell you they will make sure to come everyday to come re test it again and again, till when you have no single cucumber plants remaining, thats why i opted to have a farm outside the barracks, although i do not stay inside barracks but opposite their gate. That place is really scary indeed! With your identified gate pass to a compulsory nose mask, na die those living inside dey o! But with God we will all survive! Just to note Two heads is far more better than one cheers! |

This corona virus has really changed a lot of things in this world, some will be made rich while some will be made poor. This World economy has been shakened seriously. Thats why we need to find other sources of income just to survive, i started this farm work just to see what to rely on in this pandemic. Most businesses where shut down but farm works where exempted. You cant really arrest a farmer because if you do the whole country will die of hunger. Food is indeed the most vital thing in our lives. Without foods then there will be no sustainable life thats why it is good to invest on farming. If you are capable of having an acre just for farming please do, if you are also capable of having 10 hectares for farming please continue. And if you even still need more, i will encourage you to start and go for it at once. It will pay you for a lifetime if done well. Most politicians you see today made their money through the bush. Or their grandfathers are a big time farmer. One way or the other they are just really connected to it but they wont let you know. If you are a student or a worker and needs a side husstle but dont have the time to be running around to make more money. Why not consider this offer by investing on this with me. We can be partners and run huge farms together here in lagos. With time we can go on and extablish farms in different parts of the country. Dont you want to be like dangote? Having most of his companies in different states and controlling the affairs of things. Thinkup and be wise! You can really head up to thick villages and setup a farm there, you can really grow things there in abundance, but one thing that can crumble you as a farmer there is transport fairs and their bad roads, hmm it is well, i once helped my fellow farmer close to my farm to harvest his yellow nsuka pepper . All my hands felt the spicy burn of holding peppers. Pepper farmers are really indeed trying, if only they can be wearing disposable hand gloves just to protect their hands from the pepperish nature of pepper. Anyways in other to be making millions from farming then you will need large hectares of farms. People wants to go into it because of making money and be self employed, but you know everyone's destiny is not really the same. Some are destined for greatness while some wont make it to greatness. Its a matter of grace and not you been an expert in the field. One other thing i will recommend is for you to invest on manure supply to farmers here. Incase you need more info then we need to see and talk one on one, but this lockdown has restricted movements. The thing is if you can find a way to bypass all this road blocks, then you are in for making profits guaranteed cheers! |
