Ogbomoso in Oyo State has mango plantations farms. But having heard how mango trees are replanted ever 7 or so years in Australia, I wonder if we do have any plantations.

Love thread!

They don't have to be replanted every seven years. But Australians do, for yield. It's like the new palmtrees. High yield initially reduces over time, which is why new ones must be planted. The new cocoa too. Our own native brands last longer but the yield is much lower and reduces over time so cost of production is high, and is why other countries now produce more (palm oil, cocoa, groundnut, yam, cow, maize etc) per cost than we do and why our farmers struggle. It is cheaper for Europe to buy from faraway New Zealand and Australia than anywhere in closeby West Africa.

I'd love to get my hands on Australian mango seeds, but would not be surprised if they have been genetically modified to not grow from seed.

Mango trees live and produce fruit for many years, and with good growing conditions and without freezing weather that will kill the tree, mangoes can bear fruit for decades or longer. According to California Rare Fruit Growers Inc., there are mango trees reported to be bearing fruit that are older than 300 years.

That is indeed true. But 300 year old trees will not produce a competitive yield. Its like the kolanut trees on my farm. I still get a crop from the trees my great great grandfather planted, but my newer trees yield more. Besides, some trees are modified to produce fruit out of what we call season. Imagine mangoes on trees all year round.
