The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that Nigerians will pay dearly if they discredit the nation’s academics because of alleged sexual harassment in universities.

ASUU National Chairman, Dr Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this in Abuja during Senate public hearing on ‘Sexual Harassment of Students in Tertiary Institutions (Prohibition) Bill 2019’.

He said this period was not a good time to be lecturers because they are stigmatized due to cases of sexual harassment in academic institutions.

“The bias is too much. It is as if we are stigmatizing those who should be the custodians of our innovations and progress.

“Universities are currently handling problems like this and we should not discredit the custodians of our knowledge, because if we do so and cause them to lose confidence in what they are doing, we will pay dearly to recover,” he said.

Ogunyemi said Nigerians need to recognize the autonomy of universities, where there were institutional procedures through which disciplinary issues are handled.

The bill, he said, failed to take cognizance of the various extant legislations that deal with issue of sexual harassment.

“If we have a law that addresses issue of sexual harassment, why are we wasting time talking about another law. Are we also going to formulate separate laws to address problem of corruption in the universities, to address sexual harassment in the police, in the National Assembly?” he queried.

Ogunyemi noted that laws should not be made ad-hoc.

He said in other climes where issues of sexual harassment were reported, no new laws were formulated to address them.

He said instead of formulating new law, the National Assembly should review the existing laws.

Responding, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, said the bill was never intended to vilify the teaching professions.

He also dismissed ASUU’s stance on the need for the bill, saying if there were lacunas in the existing laws, they would be reviewed and new ones would be made.

“The bill is aimed at addressing this issue in a particular sector. It doesn’t stop anybody from bringing new bill that will address the same issue in another sector. Laws will always be made to address issues. This is to address sexual harassment in our tertiary institutions,” he said.

Earlier while declaring the public hearing open, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said there was need for stakeholders to think upon new resolutions and sanctions to check sexual harassment if the extant laws were not tight enough.

The stigma continues to increase because ASUU shy from their responsibility in disciplining their members. The university council shy from their responsibility too because in most cases the allegations made by the accused are swept under the carpet although not in all cases. However this does not rule the fact that they pretend to be working when the issue had gone haywire.

Often rogue lecturers are celebrated, get all the juicy career advancement. For years ASUU allowed this evil to fester under her nose, now they are crying about discrediting them. Oga you people have no credibility in the first place

My advice!

As a man, whether lecturer or illiterate, stay away from female folks.

If you must have a fling with any girl, make sure you are smart.

After seeing what that girl almost did to that guy on Val's day in Benin. Almost succeeded in framing the guy as a ritualist. I am scared of the opposite sex.
The case of Neymar Jnr
The case of Ronaldo CR7
Even the Coza saga?

Truth is if a lady accuse a guy of any crime, as long as the guy have no evidence to prove otherwise, 99% will believe the lady.

Guys if you are with a lady, make sure your phone cameras and audio recording is working.

My 2cent.

However there are some lecturers who harass female students and vice versa.

I believe what Prof. Ogunyemi is saying is that there is no need to do a knee jerk response to the issue of Sexual abuse in our Universities. What they(legislators) should be focussing on is wholistic review of laws surrounding sexual abuse in Nigeria.
All sectors have gotten it, but most are too oppressed to have a voice.
You don’t just look into education sector alone and leave sexual predation in civil service, defence etc.
We know of sex for marks in University, I’m sure we are aware of sex for Jobs, sex for promotion, sex for contract etc.
So should the other evils be downplayed?
What we need is an wholistic review of the set law.

Hmmmmmmm, let there be law that covers all forms of sexual harassment and not just education. Who will the young vulnerable job seeker report to, how about that banker that was sexually assaulted just in the name of marketing?

We have reactive and wasteful legislators, like he opined are they no laws in the land already to tackle sexual harassment?
All they like to do is summon and summon, take sitting allowances and enlarge their pockets

I think he makes sense. Our law makers should try review existing laws. We still have laws which deterrent is ₦10000 fine or 3months in jail for criminal offence.
Law making should be devoid of emotions or rave of the moment, amend existing laws to take away the process of investigation from the institutions if that is what has been impending proper investigation of previous cases.

if ASUU had a disciplinarian committee on sexual report in all universities, all these sexual harassment in all Nigeria universities wouldn't have escalated to this level

a lecturer in my school slept with 50% of ladies in my class and the least educated lady in my class CGPA was higher than mine and you're saying rubbish

Let there be a general law against sexual harassment. Not just one for ASUU members.

If u go for a job and the employer says he won't give u d job except u sleep with him there should be a law against that.

Also if a woman tries to sexually harass a man, like students trying to lure lecturers to sex so as to get grades they too should be purnished

Na God go punish una!
I hate Lecturers. With everything in me.

Set of sadists, narcissists. Name it!

But you know what? Y'all are not God.

Victimize poor students all you can, karma will still catch up before you die.

Wonder why a lot of them end up losing their jobs, broke or with one disease or the other.

Too many hates in that job, even amongst themselves.

May Heaven heal that profession.

So you mean you perverted, radically depraved, power drunk souls deserve a free out-of-jail card when you sexually abuse hapless students because you are glorified teachers teaching outdated topics in courses to half-baked graduates in glorified secondary schools called universities?

Well this is Nigeria. Shithole. Anything goes.
