You can write on Automated School Timetable Software. If you come up with that and due diligence is done you will not only scale through the academic hurdles you will still be financially rewarded selling the software after developing it.

I was like you some months back, also looking for a software idea. You could go with the suggestion by smartdata and develop a time table software. Better still, you could develop a Student Record Management Software, or an inventory software for a supermarket.
