Didn't know this much Nigerians cared for country music tho. Aint gon lie it's not been long I started listening to country/western music, soul, black old school music including rap, reggae etc. I just knew something was missing each time I cringe to the jargons that play on tv both locally and internationally.
I was in a place I needed serious soul searching and good music was the remedy. How overwhelmingly good was old school music? The lyrics, the message, addressing societal issues and personal struggles.
Kenny Rogers was one of my favourite sing along musician, the gambler, Lucille, coward of the county, islands in the stream with Dolly Parton. I am a huge, huge fan of country music. Some of my other favourite; You never even called me by my name Take me home, country road Choices Coat of many colors Your cheating heart Walkin after midnight King of the hill I'm a man of constant sorrows Jolene(as a kid, my mum always plays this. I remember cus this one just sticks to your mind forever) The devil went down to Georgia(mad song, lol).
I advice my fellow youths to indulge more into meaningful songs, of course old school music. You'd be surprised how much you can learn from music.
Rest in peace Legend, thank you for contributing postively in my life.

MISSCONGENIALITY: I knew him very well. He was my grandpa's close friend and I remember him tickling me whenever he visited my house back then when I was still little. He even called me his grand daughter in law. When his grandson Kingsley told him he was getting married, he was disappointed to hear that he was marrying an Egyptian girl. Then he jokingly told me he would take me as his new wife. I was preparing to go visit him when this demonic pandemic from China started flying around and movement was restricted. Now we are never gonna marry again. And now he bows out of the stage to live forever in my heart. RIP MY LOVE. Are u serious or hallucinating...? |

logon599: There are lessons in his song "the gambler" that I find important to this day, even though I don't gamble but those lessons can be applied to life.
Like this line- "So for a taste of your whiskey, I'll give you some advice"
Lesson 1: Don't desire something valuable if you're not willing to give something valuable in exchange for it.
There are several others I can't go into. Song is filled with lessons:
"You got to know when to hold em Know when to fold em Know when to walk away And know when to run You never count your money When you're sitting at the table There'll be time enough for counting When the deal is done
Every gambler knows That the secret to surviving Is knowing what to throw away And knowing what to keep Cos every hand's a winner And every hand's a loser And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep"
RIP Kenny Rogers

Olanipekun1:
RIP legend
my favorite of his song
On a warm summer's eve
On a train bound for nowhere
I met up with the gambler
We were both too tired to sleep
So we took turns a-starin'
Out the window at the darkness
The boredom overtook us,
And he began to speak
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind me sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"
So I handed him my bottle
And he drank down my last swallow
Then he bummed a cigarette
And asked me for a light
And the night got deathly quiet
And his faced lost all expression
He said, "If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
Every gambler knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what to throw away
And knowin' what to keep
'Cause every hand's a winner
And every hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for is to die
in your sleep
And when he finished speakin'
He turned back toward the window
Crushed out his cigarette
And faded off to sleep
And somewhere in the darkness
The gambler he broke even
But in his final words
I found an ace that I could keep
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
You've got to know when to hold 'em (when to hold 'em)
Know when to fold 'em (when to fold 'em)
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done |
