I would like your opinion on this. My hubby and very close friend are in IT. Systems adminstration, Tech support; security, BCP; service management bla bla bla dem don do am.

They both tell me not to move to IT. As far as they are concerned, IT is a thankless job and the business generally shits on IT folks.

I know this is true in most cases except you work in an IT organization like RIM; Google where the main stay of the business is IT. In any other biusiness, where IT is a support function, the way the group is viewed is determined by the CEO and senior management. If they believe in Technology; they will treat IT good and the reverse if they don't see the value in IT.

That being said; I know that IT yawa no reach AUDIT yawa. I have been an internal auditor for most of my career and it is shitty. Everyone hates auditors,  in varying degrees so I'm used to the hating. Especially if you are unfortunate to work in a non strictly regulated business or a private company(not listed on the exchange); you are regarded as evil, period.  No one respects you and gives a damn.;even in my current company I wonder why we still have a job!. However, the pay is good because you are compensated for soft skills. I want to do something else in my career  and I want to add some other skill set to my resume e.g being the doer rather than reviewer. They are different skill sets.

My situation is that I am not interested in the techy side at all. I don't mind updating myself to understand general techy things but not inteersted in being a specialist.
I want to still have that business interaction; besides I have developed a lot of competency in anaylytical skills; relationship management and I have many years experience dealing with C-level people. I really would not be going for anything less than a Managerial role. I am currently looking at switching within my company. I have a good rapport with the VP IT Ops and he seems to be open to me coming over to try-out on a couple projects. He complains that his people are too focused on techy side but not interested in building business skills?
Personally I'm looking at doing ITIL and getting my PMP. Everything is still up in the air though!. The only thing I am sure of is that I want to leave audit; I had wanted to leave like 5 years ago! grin

Are there other valid arguments for not going into IT? other than the requirement to constant update yourself in technology.

Any wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Yodi.

If you opt for ITIL, after the foundation exams, take it up a notch by attempting the Service Transition module of the ITIL lifecycle. You can't go wrong with the knowledge and project management skills.

These are the people that boss techies around.
