Sanusi is World, African Central Bank Governor of the Year Nduka Chiejina and Collins Nweze 06 /01 / 2011 06 :45 :00 The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has been given double awards by the renowned global financial intelliegence magazine, The Banker , a publication of the Financial Times of London. Sanusi was conferred with the awards of the Central Bank Governor of the Year for the world, and that of Africa. According to a statement signed by the Country Representative, Nigeria, of The Banker Magazine, Financial Times , London, United Kingdom, Mr. Kunle Ogedengbe, the magazine noted in its January 2011 edition, that in the last 18 months that Sanusi has been in office, he has salvaged a crumbling Nigerian financial sector, including implementing reforms that have put Africa’s most promising market back on the map for investors globally. Editor of the magazine, Mr. Brian Caplen, noted that few candidate names can generate an overall consensus on judging panels and yet, when it came to finding the best global central bank governor of the year, Mr Sanusi was chosen unanimously. Caplen stressed that Sanusi embarked on a radical anti- corruption campaign aimed at saving 24 banks on the brink of collapse and pressed for the managers involved in the most blatant cases of corruption to be charged and, in the case of two senior bankers, convicted. Caplen added that the reforms initiated by Mr Sanusi have been hailed as necessary to sanitise the banking industry and that observers have argued that, had these reforms not been initiated, Nigeria would have entered into another round of banking distress. In giving Sanusi the award, "the implementation of stricter disclosure policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria has also led to a culture of greater transparency in the sector," he said. The magazine noted that the reforms of Sanusi are to enhance the quality of the Nigerian banks, establish financial stability in the system, provide enabling and healthy financial-sector evolution as well as ensure that the financial sector contributes to the real sector rather than just serving the banking sector alone. Meanwhile , the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has added the Chinese Yuan to a list of currencies that can be used for trade settlement in the domestic foreign exchange market. This addition is coming on the heels of increasing trade flows between Nigeria and Beijing. The CBN says the addition of the Yuan brought the number of tradeable currencies in the country to 13 , including the US dollar, Euro, British Pound and Japanese Yen. China is encouraging countries to use the Yuan for trade settlement and diversify bilateral trade away from the dollar. About a third of Nigeria’s imports come from Asia, most of them from China, according to the CBN. "We have issued a circular to the banks permitting them to trade in Yuan. China is one of the fastest-growing economies and Nigeria’s trade relations with China are increasing," CBN spokesman Mohammed Abdullahi said. According to Reuters Data for 2009 , the latest available, show Asian imports into Nigeria’s economy rose 6.6 per cent over the year while imports from Western nations declined 4.4 per cent, reflecting its shifting trade pattern. The volume of Yuan trading in the country is initially expected to be very low but it is seen as an important symbolic move. |
