The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, says only two coronavirus patients have died in the state’s isolation centre.

He said other patients died on their way to the hospital or in private facilities.

Abayomi said this at a press briefing to give the situation report on COVID19 in Lagos on Sunday.

According to him, those who died on their way to the hospital were avoiding the state’s isolation centre.

As of 10.20pm on Saturday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said Lagos State has recorded 306 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 93 discharges and 13 deaths.

Abayomi announced that an octogenarian died of coronavirus in the state on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 14.

He said the two patients died in the state’s facility as a result of late presentation. shocked

The commissioner said, “Out of the 14 fatalities we’ve had, only two of them have happened in our Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba and these two are examples of cases that have presented to us in a very late stage where it is very little we could do to save their lives.

“Most of them have died either en route to the hospital or in private facilities where they have been trying to avoid coming to our isolation facilities.”

He added that early presentation of COVID-19 symptoms by patients would help provide the best opportunity for them to survive the infection.

“It is important members of the public are aware that the sooner we get to know about you and the sooner we can admit you.

“If you have mild to moderate symptoms under the supervision of our expert we may be able to prevent you from moving from moderate to severe and prevent you from moving from severe to critical case.

“We implore the communities not to feel the urge to stay at home when you have symptoms of COVID19 because you are more likely to survive the COVID19 infection under our supervision,” Abayomi said in a press statement issued by the Lagos Ministry of Health on Sunday.

What stops Nigerians from going for free government treatment at the isolation center? Why must you endanger your family members and the community by hiding or embarking on self medication.

We are gradually losing the contact tracing fight because SARS-CoV-2 is already dancing skelewu in the community

People don't trust the government: It is highly disturbing that despite the awareness by government, despite the fact that people are dying, there are some Nigerians who still think there is no Coronavirus in Nigeria. This is worrisome. How do people who do not believe there's a virus protect themselves against it?

There are also some categories of people who said the disease is mainly for the rich.

There are some, who feel the virus cannot affect them, because they are black, strong, rugged and immuned.

Another set of people are those who think the virus cannot survive in Nigerian weather.

Nobody knows where this category of people got these wrong impressions from. These are the set of people who have been violating the directives of government and health workers, because they believe they don't believe in Coronavirus.
