knew him as a player in 1987 for ACB(played along side Chidi Nwanu, Henry Nwosu etc), played mostly rightful back or central defense, he also played in these positions for Nigeria at 'maroc 88' alternating positions with Stephen Keshi, Austin Eguavon and Yisa Sofoluwe.
He and Uche Okechukwu where the main central defense pair at Tunisia 94, played most of the games at that tournament. One the best pairings in the history of the super eagles
He was a thorough bred defender very calculative and precise in marking and positioning. (not all these ajebos we have these days).

It is very sad indeed. I am still having some doubt that Uche of all persons killed himself. In our hometown, it is an abomination for someone to do that. If it were before, such persons are normally thrown into the evil forest. Uche that I knew from his hometown Ezeakpi Umuabali Ubomiri, in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State, the same kindred and village with the owner of Zinox Computers, with all his investment at home and abroad under normal circumstances cannot take his life. I am just thinking of his twin brother who runs most of his businesses at Owerri and in Nigeria. He also played football with Iwuanyanwu National FC, but retired when Uche requested that he should take charge of his growing businesses. He was very kind to a fault and was ready to help those who came across him. If it is true, may God have mercy on his soul.

Okafor's body was discovered Thursday afternoon by his wife in their house in Little Elm, a town about 30 miles northwest of Dallas, Detective Oscar Hinojosa said. The official cause of death was pending.

Police were not describing it as a homicide or a suicide. "We're just saying it's a death," Hinojosa told The Associated Press. A spokesman for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said Okafor's body would be examined Friday.

Okafor played on the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the African Cup of Nations. Nigeria reached the second round of the World Cup that year and again in 1998, with Okafor on the team both times.

He didn't play in 1994 and played in one match in the first round in 1998, a 3-1 loss to Paraguay after they had beaten Spain and Bulgaria. He didn't play in the second-round loss to Denmark.

"We are totally shocked by the news. Uche Okafor was a great player who represented his country at the highest level," said Musa Amadu, acting secretary general of the Nigerian Football Federation.

Okafor played for the Wizards from 1996 to 2000.

A friend who could not reach Okafor called Ifeyinwa Okafor, the former star's wife, police said.

"She was at work and she came home and found him," Hinojosa said.

He lives in Texas U.S. Stories circulating around the Nigerian community is that he was having problem with his wife, who was a nurse, which might have been 1 of the reasons he committed suicide. This has become a major problem amongst Nigerian marriages, a man goes back home marries a nurse brings her to the U.S, she remains a loyal until she starts earning money & gets into the grove with her fellow Nigerian nurses. Then she changes & starts showing her true poor as hell, ghetto self ( i mean you can take the man/woman out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the man/woman, Right). Stories abound of Nigerian men killing their wives who are nurses. May his gentle soul R.I.P.

Uche Okafor is not a twin.You are confusing him with Uche Okechukwu who is a twin with whom he played alongside in the National Team.Complete Football Magazine(June 1994) is my source.
