ASUU Salaries: Use Of BVN Will Expose Lecturers With Multiple Jobs – FG by NollyMedia(f): 12:14pm On Apr 24, 2020
The Federal Government says its insistence on members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) producing their Bank Verification Number (BVN) for the payment of their withheld two months will expose those with multiple jobs.

ASUU members, who are currently on an indefinite strike, on Wednesday rejected the demand by the Federal Government to produce their BVN before the payment of their February and March salaries.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday approved the payment of the withheld two months salaries of ASUU members who refused to enrol on the Integrated Payment Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

In a swift reaction, ASUU explained that the Federal Government does not require lecturers’ BVN to pay the two months withheld salaries.

The Federal Government through the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echono told Daily Sun that the affected ASUU members were not asked to enrol in the IPPIS before being paid their February and March salaries.

Echono explained that the affected lecturers were only asked to provide their BVN to their vice-chancellors, adding ”truth is finally coming out. Why are they afraid of BVN? Because all payments to a single lecturer through multiple accounts with different universities will be linked and traced through BVN.

“Those working in three, four or five universities and still claiming allowances for excess workload in their parent university will be exposed. This is the crux of the matter. It is about transparency and accountability period. Ask them about moonlighting by their members and draw your own conclusions.”

ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator Prof Olusiji Sowande confirmed that VCs of the concerned federal universities were directed to collect BVN from ASUU members who have not been paid the February and March.

According to him, the salaries of lecturers in federal universities are usually paid without BVN and he wondered why the government is demanding for it, stating that the intention is to gather information about lecturers that rejected the IPPIS.

Some of the vice-chancellors confirmed to our correspondent the directive to demand lecturers’ BVN and also acknowledged the opposition of ASUU to the use of BVN to pay the withheld two months’ salaries.

ASUU University of Lagos chapter in a circular to members said information from some branches indicated that the payment is conditioned upon filling of IPPIS form and submission of BVN.

“Our union’s opposition to the obnoxious and retrogressive IPPIS enrollment for which we have been vindicated still stands. While thanking our members for being resolute and steadfast in the struggle for a better public university system in Nigeria, please, be rest assured that sooner than later all our outstanding salaries would be paid without any encumbrance,” Dr Dele Ashiru, ASUU UNILAG added.

Dats it...when There is No Cockroach In Your 'locker you wont be afraid of releasing your bvn to FG.
michoim:
If ASUU is sincere they should release their BVN. Are they different from the rest of other Nigerians? What are they feeling like? Who are they by the way? They should be thought some hard lessons...

University lecturers are not sincere anyway. What's so difficult in releasing their BVN if they are not as corrupt as our politicians

very lame excuse from FG.
my reasons are;
1. is it that before now these lecturers receive their stipends by hand?
2. is FG saying that these lectures teaching in other schools use different names and Ids?

Is There is something sinister those lecturers are hiding because i don't see the big deal in submitting BVN for payroll purposes..Well what's even stopping the govt from getting their BVN through bank account , they don't even need to have asked the lecturers for it

Exactly the point... Government has it why ask them to submit? Pally, they are not ready to pay...The so called multiple salaries are sabbaticals and adjunct positions, which is normal within the university system globally...why is it a problem in Nigeria...Excess workload is for teaching more than 30 students and that's in your school not other schools

You are right the govt must just be using this BVN as divertionary tactics because they are the custodians of the BVN and can match any bank account to it's BVN

That is simple, let them present their accounts and then match the accounts with BVNs spooled from CBN.
Then pick out the repeated BVN for further checks.

That's the reverse analysis of it, don't need Indo-China guyz to do this

By The government is using that BVN to deduct their salaries, the ones that submitted, their salaries have not been consistent.

Several deductions every month.
And there are no bonuses, the Lecturers depend on those bonuses too.

Every account has bvn so fg has no excuse not to pay... Is just a tactical way of registering them for ippis which lectures refuse...they will get their Pay last last every dime of it..

What is hard in this issue for God's sake? Have the govt not been paying these lecturers via verified BVN accounts or it's by table payment?

We make one mistake in Nigeria .
We assume government is not subject to law or if government does or says something it has become law.

The issue here is between employer and employee. It makes no difference that the employer is goverment.
The relationship is governed by THE SAME LAWS that govern all such relationships whether the employer is goverment or MTN unless specific legislation exists to state otherwise

They are not complaining of excess workload from other schools stop this crap. It's well... you guys are paid 30k to run down other people's life...keep it up...

This is not an issue of excess workload...it's about a policy that will affect the university system...how much do you think University lecturers earn?? How much?? That will warrant unnecessary frustration from government...

A school in UK and even SA will employ a supervisor for you for the 2 or more years period of your thesis and dissertation. There is
exchange program and a host of other programs that allows a lecturer learn salary from her school and other schools that their services are rendered temporarily.

Don't join this government destroy the public universities because the government will come and go but Nigeria will remain and when your children complain of the terrible state of our Universities be so sure you will be bold to tell them you collected 30k to through social media destroy the university system.

Come and forward it for them na....what stops the government to pick it themselves using phone numbers?? Every BVN is attached to a phone number and an account number....so why not get it through it if they actually want to pay?? Pally get a job and stop this foul language on social media.

Thank you very much.

See ignorant people up there saying rubbish about the government having their bvn without realizing that just because they have it does not make it legal for them to access it.

If the government decides to extract the bvn without the lecturers permission, it's the same simpletons that will shout tyranny.

Nigerians always think they know all, when they know absolutely nothing.

I'm waiting for the day Nigerians will start approaching issues from a position of objectivity and no through personal/political sentiments and bias.

There are two sides to this issue, merits and demerits.
Let's see how it goes
Re: ASUU Salaries: Use Of BVN Will Expose Lecturers With Multiple Jobs – FG by Nobody: 3:45pm On Apr 24, 2020
The reason why lecturers have multiple jobs is simple...Nigeria does not have enough lecturers.

Indeed, the NUC issued a report in 2012 that pointed this problem of lecturer shortages out. And 8 years later, it is still a big problem

As a result, lecturers have jobs in 2 or 3 universities, because if they did not, many of those universities, mostly private, would lose their accreditation immediately. And with the number of people writing and passing JAMB far higher than the number of available spaces for them in university, that is a disaster waiting to happen.

Also, there is something called 'sabbatical' where lectures go and do some academic work elsewhere in another university, using facilities that their uni might not have. If government cuts that off because they want to stop waste...what would happen next.

Yes, let us get this IPPIS thing on the ground...but let the Educaiton ministry be realistic....otherwise, we may end up with universities lacking lecturers.

Useless government!! How much are you paying them that you don't want them to do multiple jobs.
How will they use the peanuts you pay them to cater for themselves and their families?
The same IPPIS that made this criminal government refuse to pay LUTH resident doctors since November 2019 is what this idiotic government is talking about.

Pay them their money retarrded government of Nigeria.
If you have plans for your life and no connection in this useless country better leave Nigeria and travel out. Failed system!

I wonder what's really working in this country. The way things are going is going to be brutal if nothing is done on time. As well, the kind of insentivity on the part of the government is not helping the matter. Nobody is ready to do the right thing and we call this a country. May God have mercy.
