Ghana has recorded 271 new cases of COVID-19, a week after lifting the lockdown in Accra, the country’s capital city, and Kumasi.

The cases which were confirmed on Sunday brings the total number of cases recorded in the country to 1,550.

GhanaWeb quotes the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as saying that while a total number of 11 people have died from the disease, 155 have recovered.

The service said 62 percent of infected persons are male while 38 percent are female. It said 84 percent of the cases have no travel history.

Last week, Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo lifted a three-week lockdown on the basis of “improved coronavirus testing.”

The Ghanaian president had said nonessential businesses in Accra and Kumasi could reopen but under guidelines of social distancing.

He said Ghanaians should make use of face masks in public places.

“In view of our ability to undertake aggressive contact of infected persons, the enhancement of our capacity to test, the expansion in the numbers of our treatment and isolation centres, our better understanding of the dynamism of the virus, the ramping up our domestic capacity to produce our own personal protective equipment, sanitisers and medicines, the modest successes chalked at containing the spread of the virus in Accra and Kumasi, and the severe impact of the poor and vulnerable, I have taken the decision to life the three-week-old restriction on movements in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and Kasoa, and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area and the contiguous districts, with effect from 1am on Monday, 20th April,” he had said.

At the time the president lifted the lockdown, Ghana had 1,042 cases of the disease.

The country is the first to lift the restriction on movement in the West African region.

Well

There is definitely going to be a cost

Although they have lower death rate and higher testing rate than Nigeria despite the fact that they only locked down for three weeks and have currently open up their economy.

The dilemma of underdeveloped and developing countries is choosing btw allowing the virus to spread while keeping the economy running or shutting the economy and killing the virus.

The virus would not disappear until we can get a vaccine to prevent it from spreading which is likely to come at the end of the year.

Countries cannot afford to wait that long because their economys will collapse before then.

Only 11 people have died in Ghana but 40 people have died in your country that has been in a lock down for three weeks.

Thousands died in America and Italy because they didn't test enough during the early phase of the virus.

Germany, South Korea have managed to get the virus under control because they tested enough at the early stages of the virus spreading

Nigerian government lock down the country for four weeks but have tested 70,000 people less than Ghana with 1/4 the of the population of Nigeria.

Good question !

Yet, the country the population of Lagos has carried out more test than Nigeria by almost 8 times.

Even Ghana has confirmed more cases than Nigeria.

sometimes the way Nigerians argue self dey tire person.... Ghana has 31million population Nigeria has close to 200m...even with limited resources we still compare them... Out of nearly 200million people we have 40deaths and u still think its bad.. Compare to a country of 31million with 11 deaths who still has available resources than us... Ogami do the math

Bro

Ghana has more confirmed cases than Nigeria with less deaths recorded.

The Nigerian population is useless in this argument

Don't you understand that Ghana testing aggressively would allow them detect and treat patients early before the virus cause more havoc.

I have nothing against health workers but government policy.

In fact some of our health workers have been exposed to the virus because of their services.

If we don't test early and aggressively now, we can lock down the country from now till next year, but the virus would continue to spread.

I don't understand your argument tbh

Ghana themselves don't manufacture test kits, they buy them from the international market..

The Nigerian government can also do that.

We currently have 12 test centres according to the NCDC, So I don't see why we can't match the testing pace of other African countries like Ghana.

Or are you saying Ghana is richer than Nigeria which is said to have the largest GDP in Sub Saharan Africa?

The problem with COVID-19 isn't just the likelihood of the victims dying but also that if the cases become too many it can quickly overwhelm the health care system, thereby denying other sick people from the needed care as the health workers become overstretched or even at risk of contracting it as well.

why are you hiding the real facts.Ghana with a population of 30 million people has tested 100,622 people with 1,500 testing positive which is 1.45% out of the 100,000 tested.Ghana has recorded 11 deaths so far which represents 0.17% of total fatalities.

On the other hand Nigeria has tested 10,000 people for a population of 200 million people with 1,273 testing positive which is 11% of totql people testing positive out of the 10,000 tests and 40 deaths recorded.

So the fact that you do not test or record more cases does not mean the people are not infected. The earlier you test early, isolate the patients and treat them before their health deteriorates just as Ghana is doing.

As with everything else, Nigeria is bungling this. By now, Nigeria should have done at least 1m tests. 10,000 is paltry for Nigeria population and exposure. This is not going to be over soon.

My brother leave those people. All the nations that have got a handle around this virus are nations who prioritized testing. While Ghana is doing excellently well in this regard, Nigeria is yet to start.

Whoever thinks Nigeria is doing well does not know what we are up against. Bringing population into the argument even goes to substantiate the argument that Nigeria is far far far behind Ghana.

A country of 39m has tested 100,000
A country of 200m has tested 10,000.

Ghana has aggressively ramped up majority of infected ones by their heightened testing. Meanwhile, in Nigeria you have to be connected to be tested or run to a police station for help.

Two cases have absconded from Borno isolation centre. One of them was found last night in Maiduguri already in critical condition. Right now he is on ICU. Why there is no security attached to isolation centres with all the report of vectors absconding baffles me. We are not ready for this pandemic.

Without aggressive testing, isolating and treatment, years of lockdown would mean nothing. The so-called lockdown is even annoyingly porous in the first place.

In all honesty FG and NCDC are not doing anything let's call a spade a Spade.

We shldnt sugar coat it at all.
We've been on lock down for 4 weeks now and just about 10,000 people have been tested and we all know the best way to contain the virus is to do mass testing and isolate those +ve but no they re only doing the test selectively.

How can a state like Kano run out of test kits.
It is a big shame on our govt.

With all the funds we got, we're doing less to what many expects us to be doing right now.

If u re a govt official, and u re using this period to enrich urself fraudulently pls rmba Abba Kyari and rmba u ve families and children.
