there was a time that myself and one of my neighbors experienced technical damages in almost all our appliances after a heavy thunderstorm.
So we concluded that the lightening protector of the house is no more working. Since then, we usually unplug all our appliances when it's raining, including the TV even if we are using them at the moment.
My question now is that can I make a lightening protector for my apartment alone? Or is there any other means one can use to prevent damages during thunderstorms even if the appliances are in use?

Re-earthening of the whole building will go a long way, since the discharge can't be conveyed properly to the earth.
Then add one or two spike if its a high rise building or thunderstorm prone geography.
