The issue of speaking in tongues is one topic that cannot be over exhausted due to the differences in practice among members of the Christian body and Pentecostal churches.

I know a number of Churches that practice it and a few that don't.

Matthew 7:16-17 NIV
"By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? [17] Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit"

Now if indeed speaking in Tongues as it is practised in Pentecostal churches today is of God and is indeed right, in relation to the verses above, what fruits has it produced in such churches/ the members?

If it is indeed an erroneous doctrine, has the lack of the speaking in tongues in Churches where they are not spoken affected the growth of such churches, or are such churches flourishing (spiritually), notwithstanding?

Nairalanders, what church do you attend and do you speak in Tongues in your church? Why/why not?

Over to you. Let's discuss.

What fruit in particular are you seeking to find through whether the people in the building speak in tongues or not?

The act is individual! not sure how the church people influence the meaning of the individual act in any way

Some people believe that Speaking of tongues is one of the ways to identify fruitfulness and spiritual growth in a Christian or in a Christian body. On the other hand, some school of thought think otherwise.
The reason here is to find out from either side of the coin. If indeed it is a sign of growth, does that imply that people or bodies who don't subscribe to it either individually or corporately, are not growing spiritually in the real sense of it?

Oh yes it has. It is individual agreed, but If the church you attend believes in the speaking in tongues doctrine and practices it, you will most likely also. Also, if you attend a church that doesn't, you cannot exercise your speaking in tongues in the church environment even if you have the ability/practice it.

Fruit of Speaking in tongues? There are no fruits listed by Paul of such.

I believe the Spirit of God gives these gifts, but the actual fruits come from having the Spirit lead. For those who have the gifts of the spirit, but are ruled by their sinful self, living the way the sinful self wants, spiritual death will eventually happen, according to Paul(Romans cool.

I don't believe it has anything to do with a church, after all, God does not bow to the whims of a mere gathering of men. The Holy Spirit, who is God Himself, gives His gift to whomever He wants to whenever He wants to. And this particular gift is not even to the benefit of any church, so speaking it in church is nothing but chaos as Paul himself described in 1 Corinthians 14

Fruit as used in the context does not mean 'Fruits of the Spirit', as listed by Paul.

Speaking of tongues as it is practised in most churches of today is more of a mechanical action than anything spiritual.

On the contrary, the church has a direct effect on the people who belong to it, so, the practices of (the people) who make up the church has everything to do with the church as a whole.
Pentecostal churches of today and most new generation churches for example, speak in tongues in the church and encourage their members to do likewise which is wrong.
They attribute it to signify the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, ie a sign of spiritual growth/baptism of the Holy spirit.
In other words, you cannot claim to have the holy Spirit without the evidence (of speaking in tongues)

There are Churches however, who do not subscribe to speaking in tongues.

A Pastor of a popular church I had a conversation with a while ago said that a Church that doesn't believe in speaking in Tongues cannot be a progressive church. An assertion I do not subscribe to.

Those who submit to religious peer pressure have their own selves to blame for whatever comes of their meekness.

.
Speaking in tongues isn't the only gift the Spirit of God gives, and it is not all person's who are baptized that that will receive said gift.

I am not sure why it is the place of a so-called church/pastor/preacher/prophet etc. either to subscribe or not subscribe, on behalf of a congregation on such matters. That is just foolishness on the part of those who join such clubs and nothing more.
