I've been with the young family during this lockdown period and I observed her closely..

When someone stands up from the chair, she quickly put her nose there. Likes to smell one's fart as well as puts her nose close to rotten food, dirty socks, shoes etc..

It's getting out of hand and the mom is worried now..

Is this normal? Is this a rare medical condition? Will she change this habit over time? What can we do to help her?

Kindly advice

Just keep cautioning her
Spank her a bit
She would outgrow it
If she doesn't, shame would make her outgrow it when her classmates start making jest of her .
She is just exploring and trying to understand her environment.
You can introduce her to better scents or smells , to change her preferences .

How about providing her with good scents like spraying perfume on handkerchief, sweet smell of pastries and flowers? Etc etc.

If she's exposed to both types of scent her brain will by default prefer the good smell and with time she'll abhor the nasty stink she's having a liking for now.

Odor preferences are learned.
Humans aren't hardwired to like specific odors.

What I am trying to say is your 4yr old niece can't differentiate between odors that adults typically find either unpleasant or pleasant. At that age, she's simply learning by association.

By age 8 or 10, her responses to such odors will mimic that of an adult so she'll find it repulsive.

To speed her development, just expose her to nice and fruity smells. Don't fret, she's normal.

Take her to the hospital to see a doctor.it is better to get that part fulfilled so as to know what next to do.she will be fine.

You called her a kid right? Then that's what she is. Kids picked up some habit as they are growing up. And they will drop it as time progresses. She is just 4.. a simple don't do that again is enough for now..

I got a niece way back that picks her nose, what ever she digs out she ate.. the first time I noticed that, I was paralysed. I couldn't shout, I couldn't spank her, I just looked at her, she was just 5..
I went straight to her mother and inform her to keep an eye on her.. She's a teenager now, if u remind her of it now, she might not talk to you for weeks

she will change jare but you forgot to tell us how your niece be..age could also be looked into, in considering the kind of advice u need

I did something almost like this when I was a child,when my parents sleep then,I love putting my fingers in their armpit and inhale the smell until they noticed and started beating me for it,I had to stop
So..you just have to beat her (not hard,like a spank and some serious scolding)when you notice such,she will stop I tell you

Common! She is a kid. My sister used to eat bitter paracetamol and other drugs as a kid. Like if you gave her drug to swallow she prefers to eat it unlike other kids that will squeeze their faces but she has outgrown it now. Give her time, Okay?

She needs mental evaluation

What she needs now is proper caution.
She's just a kid acting out of curiosity.

In good times 99.99% of females want BAD men:

This females in dia prime years will date the "baddest" dudes because they're fun & exciting

In bad times they want GOOD men:

Then reality strikes ... sexual market value don low ,Then the female is washed up, that's when she wants a "real" man, to step up & save her from her lifetime of bad choices.

Her life. Sometimes in life what you like is what the society generally abhors. Because you don't want to look odd, you indulge in those things in secret.

Keep cautioning her.

If it's her life, beat her as you like, she will grow with it. And when she does, even if you don't like it, she'll still do the thing, only perhaps in secret.

Come on, but some pregnant women not only like perceiving such stuff, they like eating them.
One leaves her food to go sour, then consume at that state. Another would want to perceive another person's poo. She'll tell her husband to poo on a paper and she'll sit by the toilet door and relish the smell as much as she wants. Yet another will get dry shit and hold it close to her nose. With these cases of pregnant women matter, I wouldn't agree 100% with anyone that it has any negative health implication.

My advice? Just keep scolding her like we scold a child who sucks his lips, some eventually grow with it, and it is their life.

It's normal, she will stop it as she grows. I have a cousin who was also very fond of that when he was about that age. This is someone that I'm older than about 7 years.

He is now grown and a lecturer in a private polytechnic and we now laugh about it.

So just talk to her with caution and don't apply force or any form of punishment. It is well...

Quarantine her in a well scented room for one month.

Did u spank her to stop the bad habit

A kid of 4 obviously doesn't know what they are doing. U have to teach and correct them as many times as needed.

Believe me, she's one of them ( JUST KIDDING)

In my own point of view, she's still a kid so as time goes on she will leave the habit. It's normal.

Now that's serious.

When I was about that age I always loved perceiving d smell of ass. I would put my finger in my ass and smell it. I enjoyed it so much it became a habit but over time I outgrew it even though my mum was always beating d hell out of me each time I did it. I feel children at that age tend to exhibit irrational habits. Just keep cautioning the child and she would out grow it. No issues, it's just normal with kids to exhibit irrational characters.

On a serious note,it's something she'll stop as she grows older,don't worry.
When I was a kid I used to like sniffing dust on nets that they put on the window.

Even now,I still like sniffing fresh clean money from the mint

She’s normal. At the age I was eating mattress. Some correctional slaps and on a contact look out made me stop.

Thinking back, why would anyone eat a foam? ��‍♀️
