NIGERIA's international and Olympique Marseille left-back, Taye Taiwo, yesterday broke his club's record of appearances in European matches. Taiwo and Fenerbahce's Mamadou Niang - who played five seasons at Marseille - held the record in a tie of 52 appearances, but the defender added one more to his tally yesterday as the French Ligue 1 champions battled Premier League Champions Chelsea in Group F of the UEFA Champions League. The 25-year-old Nigerian said after the match that he is so excited making history for his club. "I'm very happy to break this record. It is not easy to stay in here that long," he said. Taye, who is now the second vice-captain of Marseille, joined les Phoceens directly from his former Nigerian club, Lobi Star of Makurdi. |
