50 Years After The Biafra/civil War by BachJosh: 12:04am On May 31, 2020 |
May 30, 1967, Lieutenant Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu and other non-Igbo representatives of the area established the Republic of Biafra, comprising several states of Nigeria. After diplomatic efforts by Nigeria failed to reunite the country, war between Nigeria and Biafra broke out in July 1967. Here is a list of some books on the Nigerian Civil War from a variety of perspectives. These are the books I’ve personally read or heard about and this is in no way an exhaustive list. 1) There was A country - The Great Chinua Achebe. Mr Achebe does his best to give a detailed account of the war from a personal point of view; as he travelled with his family doing his best to keep safe. 2) Never Again - Flora Nwapa, Nigeria’s first female Novelist btw, She tries (and succeeds to a large extent) to tell the story from the POV of ordinary biafrans and their experiences as the war waged on. 3) The Man Died- Wole Soyinka, One of my favourites He was imprisoned by the Nigerian government shortly after the war commenced for his political activism criticizing Nigeria’s motives. spending close to 2 years in prison in that time he wrote of his trials on scraps of waste paper 4) In Biafra Africa Died- Emefiana Ezeani This has been referred to by some as the most un-biased account of the war. 5) The Biafra Story- Frederick Foyth Mr Frederick, was an English journalist and he spent 6 months in Biafra as a BBC correspondent, the book documents his experiences, from an interesting POV. Others include; Oil, Politics and Violence: Nigeria’s Military Coup Culture (1966–1976)-- Max Siollun THIS HOUSE HAS FALLEN (Nigeria in Crisis)-- KARL MAIER Destination. Biafra- Buchi Emecheta Survive the Peace - Cyprain Ekwensi Sunset At Dawn- Chukwuemeka Ike. HAPPY BIAFRA DAY!
