Man you are very wrong if you think DSSC is Actually better than SSC, you stated 4points nd not all are correct, and on the contrary i want to tell you that SSC is better, you said it yourself that SSC guys have to compete with the guyz who came out of NDA(Regular) didn't you ask yourself why DSSC don't compete for appointments or promotions? it is because the SSC guys will get promoted faster than the DSSC guyz and thats the basic truth, as you may know, the guyz taken into the DSSC are usually older guyz Btw 29-34, that would tell you they are not needed to be fully active

Pls broo get facts b4 commenting on this issues! All have advantages n disadvantages but even SSC officers are envious of DSSC officers because of the following reasons:
1. As a DSSC/DRC officer you don't need promex(promotion exams) to be promoted to d next rank. Once you have good annual evaluation, attain courses at ur career level, no any disciplinary record and also available vacancy u will b promoted unlike SSC.
2. A SSC officer gets an antidate of 2 yrs after commissioning meaning he will spend 3 yrs as a 2nd lieutenant b4 promoted to lieutenant which is automatic promotion except oon some occasion while DSSC is commissioned as a lieutenant(before d ssc officer becomes a lieutenant, the same dssc officer is having just a year left to become a captain) if u have any army officer friend as him about the case of SSC 39 and DSSC 18 army dey both trainined together in NDA n where commissioned in 2011, the DSSC officers are 2 yrs old captains while SSC39 are still lieutenants.
3. SSC is superior to DSSC in terms of seniority of commission cos upon conversion SSC get converted to regular commission(same with dos dat spend 5 yrs in NDA) while DSSC converts to DRC(direct regular commission) Dats if u u want to reach peak of ur career. The wahala for SSC officers is only 5% are allowed to get convert to regular commission which is stated in htacos officers. I rest my case here.

DSSC in the Army are meant for Non-Combatant civilian graduates who voluntarily wish to join and serve the NA in any capacity. SSC is meant for Combatant cadets and officers and rank and file of the NA who've are serving already in the army. An SSC gets more promoted than a DSSC graduate because of their combatant roles and responsibilities in the army. DSSC is better for a civilian graduate who wish to join the army.SSC has stipulated age requirements compared to DSSC whose age requirements are flexible.

Soory sir! I disagree with ur post! Dssc don't write promotional exams to get promoted while ssc write promex and once u miss u will loose seniority of about 3 months.

SSC guys dont get promoted faster. Get ur facts right. You actually have to do courses and pass them before u are promoted as an SSC officer where as DSSC officers get promoted every 4 or 5 years without having to write exams. Same way an SSC officer can covert to be a regular officer, there is also a conversion exam for DSSC officers. I will rather prefer DSSC to SSC. And trust me, that "beef" of regular or SSC officers is practically dead. A former chief of Air Staff was an SSC officer. Many stuffs are now political. Even though a DSSC officer may not get to be a cheif, how many regular officers actually fill in those positions.

Gbam! After all d peak is major-general 4 all types of commission unless u become coas.

HOW DO I ENROLL FOR ARMY SSC??
xule20:
SSC is a Combatant Short Service Commission
(formerly known as Short Regular Commission,
SRC) that is meant for those interested in field
Operations AKA War or peace-keeping or Combat
Operations (U assume the rank of second
Lieutenant in the army -*- and R usually fielded into Infantry Corps of the Nigerian
army after 9mths - 12mths of training); after
18mths - 2yrs U receive your first promotion to
Lieutenant -**- and your subsequent promotions
are 4years a rank or as vacancies/slots arise.
When U achieve your 6th Year (Usually when U R
or awaiting to assume the rank of Captain -***-),
U will have the option to retire or convert to
Regular commission after a physical exercise; U
will receive 2 chances each year to pass this
after which at your third fail U will go on
compulsory retirement. N.B;- NDA graduates R
on Regular Commission by default; This grants
them automatic right to hold any appointment
anywhere in the armed forces; a right SSC may
share if God, age and politics is on your side.
DSSC is Direct Short Service Commission and is
meant for professional Officers interested purely
in administrative functions of the army (U will
assume the rank of Lieutenant -**- after training
and will be fielded into any of the Corps where
vacancies exist for your discipline after 6-7mths
of training). Your First 2 ranks will be achieved
after 5years of promotion each. In your 10th
year, you will have the option of retiring or
convert to Direct Regular Commission which will
involve mainly just a medical exam and filling a
couple of documents after which U will be
deemed converted and subsequent promotion will
be achieved on a 4year basis a rank or as
vacancy/slots exists N.B;- Direct regular
Commission legally can achieve any rank except
the APEX rank in each armed forces; In the case
of army Lieutenant General. However they
cannot hold any Major appointment that demand
control of combatant troops, unfortunately most
of these appointments R usually assigned to
Brigadier or Major Generals (a rank that usually
has very limited slots/vacancy for occupancy
compared to number of officers qualified to filled
them) so most times in the past, DRC don't
usually proceed after the rank of Lieutenant
Colonel or Colonel - though this trend is fast
changing as DRC now achieve the rank of
Brigadier General even Major General, thanks to
Democracy......
A B. ed can go for DSSC if there is vacancy in
the Education Corps only beyond that no hope; a
B. ed can go for SSC as what U read doesn't
matter everybody will just face Infantry (The
Combat land troops department of the army).
Education Corps is for teachers and staff of
Military school and military institutes, Infantry is
war, peacekeeping and training for other
combatant troops....
Yes a B.Ed can go for all armed forces but only
army has SSC the rest have only DSSC.....
Jets and Crafts/Vessel is exclusively for NDA
graduates and not DSSC
Special forces R members of the armed forces
trained for specific field OPS (for Now boko
Haram & counter insurgency is the core of all
Special forces training course menu) Airforce
has QRF (Quick response force), Army has CTU
(Counter terrorism Unit)..........
Military reserve R meant for Mass recruitment/
re-engagement into the armed forces in the
event that the armed forces or the Nation is
overwhelmed by a foreign or local threat. Retired
officers fit the profile, also Civil defence and
other paramilitary bodies can be conscripted in
the event of a General state of
emergency...........
Pistols R meant specifically for commandants/
Commanders/Service Chiefs or as occasion
demands. Usually the culture is for your Aides to
carry arms for U as a very senior officer; a very
senior officer or a commander will only agree to
carry in the event that his unit is on Military alert
(by this time every personnel will be on
camouflage only all day of the week instead of
switching between other variants of their
uniforms)......
Usually for SSC in recent times, 30years is the
maximum and 26 is the minimum but if U R
younger and have your first degree U will be
accepted. DSSC for army and airforce is
minimum 26 to 35 maximum but even if U R
younger with a first degree U R welcome. Navy
insists on maximum of 30yrs and younger with
first degree for DSSC.......
Army, Navy, Air force is anyone's choice. Army
is a place people R wary of because they have a
tradition of promoting at a slower rate than
others (though that is changing now), Air force is
a place deemed better than army in terms of rate
of promotions, though the level of discrimination
for appointments against DSSC is far higher than
that of army (in the army the man who can do
the job and is qualified gets its; airforce they will
consider Regular Commission qualified or not
before DSSC). Navy is deemed the best in terms
of pay and other things; the problem is that its
deemed the most difficult to enter...........so U
choose as your Spirit leads

I thought this might be useful:
THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THOSE COMMISSIONED INTO
THE NIGERIAN ARMY!
There are 5 types of commission in the Nigerian Army (NA) - Not
Armed Forces. They are:
1. Regular Combatant (RC). Training takes 5 years.
2. Short Service Combatant (SSC). Training takes 6 - 9 months.
3. Direct Regular Combatant (DRC). Now attained on conversion
from DSSC.
4. Direct Short Service Combatant (DSSC). Training takes 6 - 9
months.
5. Executive Commission (EC). Training takes 2 - 3 months.
Details of such commissions are to be found in the Harmonised
Terms and Conditions of
Service (TACOS) for officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces but a
summary goes thus:
RC and SSC are combatants, trained to fight battles. Others are
not meant to be combatants.
Both SSC and DSSC are of relatively short durations (not more
than 12 years I think,
excluding extension of service) and must convert to RC and DRC
respectively to enjoy a
longer career. Theoretically, RCs and DRCs can rise to become
generals ie Brigadier Generals,
Major Generals etc. (Remember the pyramid structure? The higher
it gets, the smaller it
becomes. In other words, many are called but only a few are
chosen). DRCs are mainly
professionals - surgeons, pharmacists, chaplains, surveyors etc. -
and are usually not found
in the core combat arms of Infantry, Armour and Artillery but are
be found in the Army Engineers
and Signals. ECs are made up of former soldiers and do not
usually exceed the rank of Major.
There are varying criteria for the various commissions. In reality
the advantage is more on
the side of those who were originally RCs than those who were
originally SSCs in terms of age,
rank, numbers etc. However, anything can happen, for instance Lt.
Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi (rtd.)
rose to become Chief of Army Staff (COAS) even though he wasn't
originally an RC.
Although DRCs may never become COASs or General Officers
Commanding (GOCs), they can apart from
being Staff Officers also hold command posts in corps or services
in which they predominate.
These include Education, Medical and Finance among others.
Life in the Army here in Nigeria can be promising, particularly now
that efforts have been made
to consolidate emoluments but achievement of success or wealth
in the Army (here in Nigeria as well
as is in other countries) is a product of motivation and
determination. If you want to live well,
you will. If you don't, you won't. The choice is really yours!
For RC or DRC, mininum years of service is about 15 years and life
as a cadet can be quite strenuous.
Generally, training is in the Infantry Corps Centre and School
(ICCS), Jaji, Kaduna State. As for the
DSSs and ECs, their training is usually less strenuous, not as in
NDA where RCs and SSCs are trained.
Cadets are usually humourously welcomed with the euphemism,
"Unfortunate Nigerians, you will nearly die
but you will not die!" But you should survive if you are physically
fit afterall, many have gone before
you. As a cadet, you are entitled to allowances which may not
really cater for your family if you have one but could go a long way
to help you sustain yourself.
If you wish to obtain more information on the Nigerian Army and
the types of application forms available,
you can check with the Army Public Relations Department in any
military barracks near you. For RC, you
need at least 5 credits including English and Mathematics. For
SSC, DRC and DSSC, you must be a
graduate. Lawyers in the army are usually found in the Army Legal
Services and the Military Police.
They can also be found in lesser numbers in other corps and
services. As for your private practice,
it all depends on what type but you won't be expected to have
your private practice as a lawyer alongside your military career.
Lastly, it is also noteworthy to say that the Nigerian Defence
Academy (NDA) now offers some post-graduate
courses for those in the military as well as for those not in the
military.
Nice post brother. I want to join d dssc and I know fully well that the training is btw 6 to 9months. During d course of training will there be allowances and if there is please what are they? 2ndly how long does it take for a 2nd lieutenant to be promoted to a 1st lieutenant . Thanks.
